ASUS H97-PRO - problem with USB connection HDD

When you connect an external HDD - "wd elements portable" to the USB ports spontaneously restart the computer operating system Windows 8.1.
Windows 7 works fine. Help!

Which ports are you using? And is the external HDD USB 2.0 or 3.0?
