Asus G75VX: GPU replacement

Hello to all,

I have recently come across the opportunity to purchase an Asus G75VX for a great price. The only catch is that the GTX 670MX video card is not functioning.

Since I can not find much information through general searches, I would like to find out if anyone here on the ROG forums know if the GTX 670MX can be replaced with a standard GTX 670M, the latter being quite cheap, or would I need to purchase the GTX 670MX which seems to be more than double the price?

Lastly, I would also like to know in anyone's personal opinion if this is likely going to be a bigger effort than worth the hassle, or is this simply a 'pull out - put in' easy solution? I would need to import the card, unfortunately, as I cannot find them locally in Australia.

I have decent knowledge as far as hardware is concerned and I am comfortable replacing PC components. However, I have never worked on a laptop before, so I would like to know if I am getting myself into something a little difficult here?

Any answers appreciated.

Cheers,
des.

I think this disassembly will work for your VX also, for what it takes to take it apart. Unlike Desktops all the cables and cable connections are extremely delicate and easily damaged/destroyed. I don't think they started soldering them to the MB until they released the G750 I could be wrong about that as I don't have a VX. It seem a few people have had to repaste. Are you sure that this ones GPU is dead? its possible that it just needs repasting and the correct drivers installed? Has anyone tried it with an external monitor? I would if you get it running start with the latest driver listed in Asus Support Download
Search back through these threads as there were discussion as to whether we could put a 670mx in our G75 VW, if I remember right it would be possible but expensive for just a little gain. Again I could be wrong it coud be that you would need a 670m heat sink to go with the 670MX GPU

Thank you for the response Clint.

i am not 100% sure that the GPU is actually the problem, however the seller did say that he took it in for repairs and was told the GPU needed to be replaced. He was quoted $800 AU, which is crazy in my opinion. the GPU will cost $500 to import from Asia, so I guess its understandable.

I wish I could test it for myself, but unfortunately I would have to by it as is.

Thanks for the heads up on those threads, I will do some searching.
