Crosshair V Formula-Z 9590 fx 32gbs random freezing

azreil_nightsky

Thank you for taking a moment to read this...

I just bought a crosshair V formula-z motherboard
8 core fx 9590
cpu liquid cooler (h80)
kingston ram 32 gbs ( 4x 8 gbs) 2400
AMD Radeon™ HD 6970
roswell psu 1000w lightning series
I have made NO changes in the bios....the settings are completely stock.

Everything is brand new - out of the box - installed today (9-26-2014)
It has a new installation of windows 8.1 64 bit
latest bios version and every update windows has to offer ...

It boots up fine runs smooth ...cpu temp ranges from 30* - 44* C
gpu temp is ranging from 35* - 77* (depending on video load)
the case has 2 x 8" fans on top , 1x side panel fan 10" , 1x 6" fan front panel

My problem is ....It keeps freezing....randomly ...but consistently.
I could be running for 3 minutes......or 3 hours....(depending on what I do)
For example.....I noticed it freezes A LOT more if I try to play any decent graphic game...any mmorpg...
I get more frequent freezes.

Screen and mouse are unresponsive. I have no choice but to hit reset.

It's really frustrating.....these parts were very expensive...
plus....I'm afraid of the potential damage constant resetting of the board could do...

Any insight guys ? Maybe someone has this same board....with close to the same specs.......if so.....could you share your bios settings ?

First, remove all but one stick of RAM, and see if anything changes. I would downclock the RAM to 1600 MHz too.

Hi azreil_nightsky and Welcome to ROG.

The CvFz and FX 9590 is an extreme build and because of the FX-9590 TDP draw, It gets hot and fast.
From your description, HEAT is going to frustrate your experience and besides the heat from the CPU you need to also keep an eye on the VRM temps.
CPU temps at idle should be +5 to +10c above ambient room temp. Other temps should not exceed 70-75c under load.

You will need to satisfy yourself that the H80i cooler you are using, is in fact, inadequate, running some stress tests at stock frequency and voltage settings will prove this, whilst monitoring temperatures under load for stability. Even @4.7GHz stock. it wont IMAO, especially if you want to OC.

Also because of the TDP draw and if you wish to OC, you will need to occupy both 4 and 8pin sockets on the MB. Your CPU will need it.
If you fail the stress tests you conduct, I thoroughly recommend upgrading your cooler to the H105, if you can fit this into your case?.
Bios changes and settings apart from default at this stage are premature and pointless.
Satisfy your self with the above, then I will guide you through the next step of tweaking your BIOS.
For the best stress testing software, if you are unfamiliar, Just ask.:D

Thank you all for your replies.
I will try to answer all the questions that were posted and respond to all suggestions...

@ Dr. Zchivago - All but one ram removed and dialed down to 1500 mhz - Pc ran for 6 hours then froze when I tired to open a video file. Ram has been swapped one stick at a time - all ending with a freeze at some point or another.

@ hax0rmort - auto

@ MeanMachine - An h220 cooler will be ordered in 6 days. (The downside to this is - in order for any bigger liquid cooler to fit...I will need to remove the two top fans (if liquid cooler horizontal mounts) - (If vertical mounts ...then plenty of room)
It is strange - the radiator on the h80 is not even warm - hoses are cold too.
The 8 and 4 pin sockets are connected.
Ambient temp here , atm , is 69* F
Recommended stress testers please ? (also....I..don't know how to use them)

Thank you again so much...this is super frustrating and I appreciate the help.

(Update) ram at 1500 - 1 stick - cooler fans at max (sounds like a vacuum cleaner) - gpu fan manual set at 65% , all other case fans at 90% : result: pc ran for quite a while , longer than anticipated - froze when a dvd movie was played.
It seems to me (I could be wrong) but it seems like....anything graphical , or dealing with graphics or video ...causes a freeze MUCH faster.)

Furmark for the graphics card test. => Just burn in test.
Prime95 for the CPU. => Just stress testing and then i would try the "blend" to test ram also or "in place" for max CPU usage
memtest86 for the memory. There are setup tools that make you a boot usb stick, because its not running in windows. Just press f8 at boot (bios scren) and select the stick.

http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/
http://www.computerbase.de/downloads/system/prime95/
http://www.computerbase.de/downloads/system/memtest86/

I would start with Memtest. Next would be prime or Furmark. When both run fine let them run parallel. I would start with furmark, as sometimes when you let prime running there isnt enough cpu left for furmark to stress gpu 100%.

To check your temps i would use hwmonitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

CPU-Z and GPU-Z are fine tools to check settings and temps too.

BTW are your ram timings correct? (Check with Ram description/manual and cpu-z)

If you have things set to auto, then there is a problem. You should have selected either Manual (and fill in ram timings, etc) or DOCP and select your XMP or AMD RAM profile. This will auto fill the correct ram timings for you.

I suspect you have default (auto) timings and that is causing your crash.

I do still agree with Mean that the H80 will definitely under perform for this monster CPU. But it should not prevent you from idling with it. Try setting DOCP and selecting a XMP profile.

After reading more of your experiences, I'm with MeanMachine about heat dissipation.

Additionally, I just use RealBench to stress test my system these days - it will work all of your components harder than most games. Plus, it's just one program in place of three.

There are a number of free testers out there as mentioned, and its good fun to benchmark in order to understand your systems performance.
Part of the fun is learning how to use them properly, and for them to have some meaning.
I think I may have tried them all at some time or another, but I always come back to ROG Realbench, for a real world stress test and the ability to compare scores with other ROG fans once scores are submitted.

Prime95 imo is a rigorous and harsh tester that has an algorithm that will intensify increasingly on each pass.
I only use it as an initial test for about 10 mins as cores will fail eventually. Never run overnight and it should be monitored in conjunction with a temperature monitor. An excellent monitor is Coretemp and its Grapher plug in.

Never use more than one temperature monitor at a time to avoid erroneous readings.
Which is the best of what are being recommended, is for you to decide and have fun with.

I have been stable now for 4 months,24/7 since tweaking to 5.2GHz, yet will fail Prime95 after 3 passes. So is this stable you may ask.
Well I do a lot of Rendering, Video Editing, and Flight Sims and had zero crashes. Always on high settings.

Others worth a look at are:
CoreTemp: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ For the grapher plugin go to the addons page.
TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.7.9 w/ ASUS ROG Skin version. http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/
Speccy for a good comprehensive look at all system specs: https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download
HWBot, many listed benchmarks here: http://hwbot.org/benchmarks
My favorite: http://rog.asus.com/file/?download=RealBench_v2.2.zip

The Corsair Hydro H80 operates at 2100 RPM with a flow rate of 2L/min=.5283 Gallons US
The Swifteck H220 Speed PWM adjustable 1200 ~ 3000 RPM, Flow Rate: Approx 1 GPM=3.78 L

A considerable difference.

Good Luck and Happy Tweaking.:D

Thank you all for your replies. I will take all this in and try the benchmarks. A tiny update...I removed the AMD HD 6970 video card and put back in my old Nvidia GeForce GT 520 ...a huge step backwards.....but.....the pc ran stable for 9 hours until it froze again. I noticed the AMD got ...well....hot. I mean the recorded temp (at least to me) was hot. But even with the 520 it still experiences freezes.
May I request a little more in-depth info about the bios settings (the auto , DOCP , and ram profile settings if possible please? I have no idea which setting to change...on what screen....etc. (It's just that the CHVFZ has sooooooo many options 0o

(Quick edit) Just noticed.......I need to make a correction....I have 2x 8gb kingston ram 2400 and 2x8gb G-Skill 2400 (Does this affect ram profile settings...etc ? )
