Repasted G750JX, shocking result.

I just recently did a repaste on my G750 and it turns out my temps lowered down by a staggering 10-15*C BOTH on CPU and GPU

My past temps were 83 max record on the CPU and 82 on the GPU

EACH TEST WAS DONE FRESH AFTER REBOOT -- TEMPS RECORDED WITH CPUID HWMonitor

CPU used handbrake bench, before 83*C, after 71*C

GPU used Furmark (Burn In 15min 1920x1080) before 82*C, after 68*C


The process took me 6 hours, ( of course I will be careful ) but when I pulled off the GPU heat sink, there was crap EVERYWHERE.. all over the board, even under the plastic protectors of the chips.


They use this sort of weird.. "paste" looks like it's some blue-tack like strip you just put down, unless it's machine applied.. it looks extremely formal. It was practically dry in my understanding.. after 9 months use on low-end games ( I play stuff like Warcraft 3 mostly with my friends, and high-end games on the side, temps never exceeded 65-70 on the GPU Tweak report )

I was literally scraping off the old stuff with a paste spreader, it looked like a cracked wall, and crumbled like plaster.



Replaced with Arctic MX-4 (I didn't use silver, though I could have for the main chips on the die, but everything else was quite small and difficult not to make a mess, I didn't want to risk getting it onto the board.)

What ever that paste is that came stock, it's simply terrible.. 10*C I understand is quite the improvement. Also got a chance to clean out my fans which was nice.

Parts of it was chipping off of the die like a dropped bread in the heat of the west, yeehaww.

Yes ridiculously it was just falling apart like a dry biscuit crumbling.. some parts of it mildly adhesive. It seems the viscosity doesn't last very long..

It looks like the Goop they used was glopped on to make a bridge between the memory and the heatsink - I had heard they used thermal pads to bridge the gap, but here it looks like just a big glob of paste.

How did you make up for the distance between the memory cans and the plate if you also didn't goop on a compound, or did you do that as well?

Did you look edge on after remounting the heatsink plate to see if there were any air gaps between the memory and plate after reinstall? There isn't a temperature probe directly on the memory, so you wouldn't see memory chips getting hot if there was a gap - but if you OC you would see lower memory speeds causing artifacts in benchmarks. You might try 3dmark11 and 3dmark to see if on the last test you see artifacts.

I was going to say too bad Asus didn't install the 34 cents of parts to populate the 3D connector/interface parts, but then another photo showed that the connector to the 2D socket is over the 3D socket space - if the 3D socket was there the 2D connection might not work - the way they have the cable built.

I didn't see too much dust on the fan blades in the photo's, did you already blow out the dust before taking the shots?

No no it literally looks like a strip of blue-tack-like paste. (That's a google sourced image)

I put paste on, yes. All 38 chips. Which used an entire tube of MX-4

I spread my paste though with a paste spreader with a dot in the middle, but I did make sure I put the plate on square.

I'm pretty sure I did the chips on properly, I put on a thin layer on every chip + a dot method to make sure I got the corners and no air was caught under. I'll check with one of those programs and see if any artifacts happen.. I haven't played a game yet.

Those pictures aren't mine, but I will soon show the ones I took.

I didn't take a picture of the dust on the fins, it wasn't too much though. By the way, for future note, if you ever want to clean your heatsink fins, the fan flips open like a door, the first I've ever seen.


P.S. I am not THAT good with peripherals about where you're talking about sockets and so on.


When I posted a question about how to take off the GPU mount, it turns out that since there's 38 chips all pasted with this.. adhesive crap, you need to literally wedge the corners ever softly off of the PCB for a few minutes to break the connection.

Darnassus, the pads are used to bridge the gap for chips mounted at a different / lower height than the GPU - so the plate can rest on the GPU can, but might not rest directly on the memory / other cans it is covering.

Here is an article that mentions higher viscosity paste to use when replacing gap bridging thermal pads.

If you gooped on the MX-4 you might be ok now, but over time it might slump and break contact with the heatsink plate. IDK, I haven't seen it and it is hard to tell from the pictures - except the goop that was in the photo's is piled pretty high.

I checked and Arctic doesn't have any thicker pastes than the MX-2/MX-4:

I haven't used K-5 Pro Gummy thermal paste, but it looks like others have - there might be issues with it, so google around before getting it - there also might be something better.

Crap. I think I've made a biiig mistake. I'm assuming my paste won't bridge the gaps for long, then. What's the best thermal tape or pads best for the job?


MX-4 seemed quite sticky but I don't think it's thick enough.. damn.

Darnassus, I know you said these weren't your photo's, but this particular shot shows what I am talking about. The plate has raised areas to meet the parts lower in height to the GPU, but there is still a large amount of paste, so I still can't tell if thin paste will be thick enough. I would have to have it in hand to tell for sure.

Darnassus, the site just came up after extensive work, they might have changed a tuning parameter and rebooted 🙂

Or, it might be a network issue - routing bump / change.
