Guru3d:AMD could be restructuring once more

BSN reported earlier that AMD might be preparing one more round of restructuring, a pretty significant one as well. The reorganization would be announced later this month. Sources claim the restructuring is supposed to be an extension of June's reorganization and it's rumored that the number of job cuts will not be as massive as AMD's earlier.

Those two divisions are the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom Business Group and Computing and Graphics Business Group. As stated before, John Byrne will be responsible for the Computing and Graphics Business Group while Lisa Su will head up the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom Business Group. Now, the restructuring that is being discussed now (and supposedly already being set in motion) is supposed to be an extension of June’s reorganization/restructuring. This will very likely result in some people changing their roles within the company as well as some people being laid off, as generally seem to happen with major reorganizations. While there are no definite figures of how many people will be let go, it did not sound like those numbers were massive like the culling of 2009 through 2012.

Unfortunately, there aren’t that many details about exactly how many people could be laid off, but this sounds like a long term plan execution rather than a reactionary cut due to poor earnings. However, there were some indications that this next restructuring would very likely come after AMD’s 3Q 2014 earnings which is on the 16th. It remains to be seen how investors will react to this news, but if AMD has poor earnings for 3Q 2014, it may be seen as a reactionary restructuring rather than a planned one which is how it was interpreted by our sources. We are labeling this as a rumor because it isn’t an official announcement, however this is essentially already a done deal. Via BSN

Seems totally logical to align the business and consumer groups separately. I've met both John and Lisa before at events and tradeshows. Nice people 🙂 I'd be interested to learn where the architecture teams lie in this.

AMD Appoints Dr. Lisa Su as President and Chief Executive Officer

SUNNYVALE, Calif. 10/8/2014
AMD today announced that its board of directors has appointed Dr. Lisa Su as president and chief executive officer and member of the board of directors, effective immediately. Dr. Su, 44, succeeds Rory Read, 52, who has stepped down as president and chief executive officer, and member of the board of directors, as part of a transition plan. Read will support the transition in an advisory role, remaining with the company through the end of 2014.

Congrats Dr. Su. Not surprising she became CEO given her operations experience, and AMD fundamentally need to keep executing well. Looks good for 2015.

I agree and hope that AMD can put pressure on Intel and Nvidia to our benefit

AMD regardless is a big disappointment to me. They seem to want to remain mediocre in their hardware performance. Years ago when their processors where a serious factor against Intel I owned the FX CPU that trounced Intel at the time. Then, all of a sudden, with Core 2 Duo introduction, AMD just "gave up" and the performance gap continues to get larger. Their bang for the buck does not hold water, so, basically Intel can do as they please with the market-no serious competition in my view.
