GL551JM - NVidia 333.17 to 344.11 Driver Upgrade Fix

I ran into issue today trying to install the latest nVidia drivers on my sons brand new Asus GL511JM. It appears that the nVidia GeForce Experience as well as the latest drivers do not support the latest WHQL drivers. By default this would leave us with version 333.17, which was released in May 2014. I'm hoping this may save others some time.

/Rant: It's pretty typical that users of laptops with nVidia or ATI type graphics cards, especially those that game, want the latest drivers. If you just look in the release notes of versions between 333.17 and 344.11, there are many instances of improved frame-rates in newer games as well as bug fixes. Any of these are valid reasons to want to have current drivers installed. Everyone knows that third party vendors such as ASUS, that lock you into vendor released drivers, are horrible about keeping these up to date, and often stop after only a few revisions. No one wants to be locked into vendor specific drivers. Yes I do understand for the masses why they do this, but that doesn't make it right. This was the first ASUS laptop that I have ran into this (out of over a half dozen I have been involved in).

Here are the steps that I did to unlock 344.11.

1) You must disable driver signing in your Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 OS. There are a few YouTube videos out there on how to do this. This will be necessary until nVidia officially supports the drivers.

2) Download and run the 344.11 installer, setup.exe... it will fail but will extract the setup and drivers to your C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\344.11\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\ folder.

3) Open up the file nvami.inf in the C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\344.11\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver folder with notepad and add the lines below under their respective sections.

[NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.0]

%NVIDIA_DEV.1392.185D.1043% = Section215, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1392&SUBSYS_185D1043

[NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.1]

%NVIDIA_DEV.1392.185D.1043% = Section215, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1392&SUBSYS_185D1043

[NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.2]

%NVIDIA_DEV.1392.185D.1043% = Section215, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1392&SUBSYS_185D1043

[NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.3]

%NVIDIA_DEV.1392.185D.1043% = Section215, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1392&SUBSYS_185D1043

[Strings]

NVIDIA_DEV.1392.185D.1043 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M "

4) In C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\344.11\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\, open the ListDevices.txt file in notepad and add lines below under their respective sections.

nvam.inf:

DEV_1392&SUBSYS_185D1043 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M "

5) Rerun the setup.exe file in C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\344.11\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\. When prompted a warning about "Unsigned Drivers" chose to install them.

6) Enjoy

You may need to do this manually with each upgrade of the WHQL drivers. YMMV as I have not tested this that much. I will report back in a week or two once my son games on the laptop a bit.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this, been looking everywhere for this. Some of my games have horrible screen tearing even with VSync on, hopefully the drivers will help! Thanks! 🙂

i was wondering if this wont damage the video card? like it may heat up more because its not the drivers for it. i hope ASUS release their own drivers soon.
