More of a google question but no

Motherboards are limited by the lanes supplied by the CPU, boards with plx chips allow more, the formula vii doesn't have one tho

Both the 4770k and 4790k only have 16 lanes, so with nvidia card that means either 2-way sli or quad sli which is 2 cards that each have 2 GPU chips on them

Also going with 2-way on a board with 16 lanes will shut down all other lanes, there may be a single x1 that isn't effected but I'm not 100% on that
CoolerMaster HAF 932 Advanced/ Maximus VI Formula/ I7-4770K/Swiftech H320/ Corsair HX850/ G.Skill Trident X (2x8) 16gb 2400MHz/ 2x 840 EVO 120gb(Raid 0)/ WD 1TB HDD (Backup/Storage)/ EVGA GTX 1gb 560 TI/ Asus 12x bluray combo

Work Station (WS) boards are designed for SLI and should allow for 2, 3 or 4 way. Mine is running 2 way SLI plus a sound card in an x4 slot. I've had 2 way plus sound card plus a dedicated PhysX card with no problems yet.

What about 1 board with 2xGPU and 1 board with 1xGPU? Assuming such a thing exists, but I was thinking of a GTX690 + GTX680, if that can be done.

You can't SLI mismatched cards.

Technically you can, but the card in the primary slot will be used and the mismatched one will just be a dedicated PhysX processor.

I thought that in the case of the GTX 680 and GTX 690 you would be able to do that as all GPUs in this configuration are using the same GTX 680 chips.
