I have a g751jt-ch71 Win 8.1 that won't play dvd movies in the dvd drive (mat****a uj8e2 s). I have installed all updates on Asus site including Bios 205. Windows device manager says everything is ok. The correct region 1 is selected. It plays music cds fine and can tell me the name of the dvd movie I just put in and all its files show up, but no play. I've uninstalled the driver and rebooted with no change. Windows update says I have the most current and correct driver, but I'm skeptical. Windows says nothing about my drive having dvd capabilities other than the name of the device-windows says its a cdrom drive. I've been researching and looking for a solution for the past 3 days. I give up.. Does anybody know what I need to do the fix this ? is it fixable ?

asusfan46738, what DVD player software are you using to play the DVD?

I use several, this one is free and has a long history.

Media Player Classic MPC-HC
http://mpc-hc.org/

I thought windows media player would work.. I don't have anything else installed yet. I will install MPC and see what happens...

asusfan46738, when you run MPC-HC, how are you trying to load/play the DVD?

The easy way is to File->"Open Disc", like this:

44689

What do you see when you "Open Disc" ?

After the Disc opens, right click in the MPC-HC player Window and select Navigate->Title Menu, you should see the DVD menu, if it lets you do that, otherwise you will need to skip through the previews.

Then, Click on Play Movie, or the Equivalent 🙂

asusfan46738, awesome!

To play Blu-ray movies, Leawo Blu-ray player is free and seems to work with everything, just make sure it can reach the internet to download updates for new Blu-ray movie encryption.

It also plays DVD's

I also use the paid for Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra 14, but that is the 2014 version, the 2015 version 15 should be out soon. You might need something like this to play the newest Blu-rays

For images I like IrfanView + IrfanView Plugins - it will also play media files.

Have fun 🙂

toronto699, the option doesn't show until you purchase Windows 8.1 Pro, then you can add DVD Playback features, among other features, with the Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack that includes DVD playback.

DVD playback options for Windows

Get more from Windows 8.1 - Add features to Windows 8.1 Pro
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/feature-packs

But, with all the other tools free/paid available, it is hardly worth mentioning 🙂

what I ment to say was u need to purchase the campability to play DVD or Bluray . native W8 cannot nor can W 8pro u must purchase software . or find free software . many do not know this lack of a feature Windows use to have. its all about Money Microsoft no longer has to pay a fee for DVD or BluRay. Money is not a mute point when u spend $1000 for a quality PC or laptop. its greed by MS
