Hmm not sure what exactly fixed it but installed a bunch of updates and upon reboot it was working, just needed to press the fn+F4 a few times to make it max brightness. Still don't like it though. Hard to read the keys and the backlight shining through the crack under the front edge of the keys is very annoying. It's a lot worse on the right hand side of my keyboard, particularly under the number pad.
