Hello. I have question. Because i am not happy at all with my Asus Strix 980. With some games i have low framerates using for example high AA like TXAA. Is any sense to sold my Asus Strix 980 and just buy 2x970?
After selling 980,should I pay a little extra cash to get dual GTX 970?
In some tests ( techpowerup ) there are 20-30 fps or more differences between 2x970 vs 1x980.

Hello sde444

Antialiasing is a setting that puts a big performance hit on your gpu, you could back it off some until you get good framerates. Or..

If it's in your budget you could get another strix 980, that would save you the hassle of selling it for two 970's and would out perform two 970's.

What resolution? If its 1080, there is no point, if everything in your system is running right you can play any game on the market maxed out over 60 fps on a single 980...

First you need to find where your performance hit is coming from using the 980. Some games will limit you because of bad optimization and no matter how fast your CPU is, you will get low FPS no matter what graphics card is plugged in. In games of this type, going to dual 970s will only make matter worse, your FPS will not increase and your then wasting more power and more cpu time for SLI 😕

On the other hand, games that are not CPU bound generally only gain a little bit of performance using 970 SLI vs a single 980. The guru3d review of 970 SLI shows a Firestrike graphics score of mid 16xxx. Many 980s are pulling 15700+ on air cooling and those who bother with bios tweaking can stretch it over 16xxx on water cooling.

All that said, with SLI you will notice dips into the 30/40 fps range more than a single card. You will be using about 2/3 more power for 10-15% increase in performance in the best case scenario and 2/3 more power for ~5% gain in many games, if any gain at all.

Do you OC your 980? You can pick up between 10-16% by simply loading up afterburner and +150 core, +200 memory, power limit to 125% done 😛

In my case two 970 were a huge upgrade from just one 970. Almost +80% fts on AAA games. Still, don't know the difference from a single 980

Personally I'll be picking up another 980 and a ROG Swift in the next week or 2

Why would you replace a 4gb gfx card with two 3.5gb cards ? If you are gaming and maxing out ya vram then 970's are personally not the way to go. You should have two 980's surely...

A single overclocked 980 can better SLI 970s in performance in most cases and in those where it cant, it is very close. Yes you can turn up the 970s some, but the SLI configuration if air cooled will limit how far they can go to try and catch the 980.

Examples of 970 SLI:

There are TONS of examples of 980s scoring like this....

970 SLI seems like a bargain, but after dealing with the frametime issues SLI has forcing you to keep FPS higher than single card for smooth game play, compatibility issues, extra power draw, extra heat, nearly identical performance etc why not just dial back a single setting slightly?!

You "can" bring a 980 to it's knees in almost any game, just turn on 8x AA, DSR to 200%, AF 8x, etc etc but it's pointless because the image quality difference in minuscule at best.

We need some more information to help. What FPS averages are you getting, what games have you tried, and what settings are being used? You also have to remember that the game itself may not be optimized. As for answering your original question, keep the 980 :). The 980 is one of the best cards you can get on the market and offers more than enough for most games. I own this card myself and I love it.
Hi, I have now retired from ASUS support, please refer problems to current @ASUS/cl- usernames.
