4790K v 4770K

I am about to embark upon a complete new system build. Don't get me wrong, my current rig hums along nicely at a permanent 4.7 GHz.

I am seriously considering the Maximus VII Formula but am a little unsure on the CPU. I can still get a 4770K and they seem to be performing better at Realbench than the 4790K.

Does anyone have any comments on these CPU's. Is one better than the other, or is it like any CPU, it depends on the batch.

I am basically using it for all types of gaming and also playing around with overclocking when I get bored.

My experience is the opposite of your observation. The three 4790K I have tried have all been better than the average 4770K. Only one of six 4770K has been better than the three 4790K. The Haswell silicon lottery still applies - there is quite a variation among 4790Ks just as there was with 4770K. It's just that the overall level has been higher for the 4790Ks I have tried.

There is also the cooling. 4790K has 'better' TIM under the lid. That improved cooling has given me 10C lower temperatures at the same power or 15 watts more to overclock with at the same temperature. That applies to CPUs that are not delidded and applies at the highest temperatures where it really matters. Delidding gives more cooling benefit even with 4790K.

Same Architecture , clock for clock they're identical, except 4790k will clock much higher on average. I belive average for 4790k is 4.7GHz, and 4770k is 4.5GHz...

I would definitely go with a 4790k, no doubt. 4.4GHz out of the box vs 3.9.

I believe the ix-4x90k chips have soldered lids instead of TIM, which means assuming the silicon is the same, you can get much better OCs out of an i7-4790k than an i7-4770k.

Hey JimmyH

If you're still running your 3770k, I'd hold off on upgrading. Broadwell is coming sometime this year and supports DDR4 memory.

But if you must upgrade now, I would most definitely choose the 4790k.

"I believe the ix-4x90k chips have soldered lids instead of TIM, which means assuming the silicon is the same, you can get much better OCs out of an i7-4790k than an i7-4770k."

I have delidded a few 4790K and they are definitely not soldered. The TIM is a different consistency and color that that in 4770K, and works a little better. Not enough better to avoid delidding for serious benchmarking.

The Extreme Editions X9xx ranging from 3920K - 3960X - 4920K - 4960X that run in 2011 sockets are soldered. Intel has said that the Haswell Extreme - 5920K, 5930K and 5960X are lidded with thermal epoxy. They might not be as good as the soldered ones, but they can't be delidded without destroying the chip.

4790K vs Haswell Extreme vs waiting for Broadwell is a matter of your choice, JimmyH. If you want it now, you'll have to do without Broadwell. If the budget precludes Extreme Editions, I think the 4790K is the best you can do.

4790k are cherry picked 4770k, so it is a no-brainer IMO.

Still it is a lottery, but with the odds in the 4790k favor (gee thanks Intel).

I have a delid 4770k that does 4.8 at 1.35 24/7 and has for over a year benching/games stable. I donated it to my wife running 4.4 at 1.175...... she does'nt "use" it.

I have a 4790k that does 4.8 at 1.25 24/7 benching/game stable ..... I will delid it when my SLI 980 KPE water blocks are in hand.

The 90 is a few degrees lower under stress.

Even if they were = in performance I like lower temps that come with lower volts.

I'm going for 5.0 at 1.325 or more once I chill it. 😉
