Just a question, I found this thread searching for NZXT H440 thread. I am current having problem with overheating my 4790k at 4.8GHz. So I try removing that front panel and that lowered my temp for 92C to 82C. So just a thought. Now I'm in the process of making custom holes on the front panel XD. It is not a quite case anyway, No matter what people say lol

I fiddled around a little, re-did the thermal paste again, checked for missing fluid sounds in the h100i, and also added 2 140mm fans pulling above it in conjunction with it's 2 120mm pushing out.
All in all it helped maybe 5c for idle state, but it still easily reaches into the 60s just as quickly as before. I figured out that HWmonitor combined with Corsair Link will basically cancel each other out, and ultimately making my PC freeze until one of them finally closes, or I restart it. While Idle though, it will bounce between ~29c to 38c back and forth sporadically with no known cause yet. I watched the CPU load % for a minute or two and it ranged from 0.00 to 4.29%, which is basically nothing, but each time it rose, the temp went up 4-8c. As it sat there idle, the base temp rose from that starting 29c to 34c as it's lowest.

Is it possible that the CPU itself has something wrong with it?

It's possible, but it's much more likely the motherboard has something wrong with it.

I know that RAM can be quirky sometimes, but how would that cause an excess of heat in the CPU at irregular intervals or programs running? Now that you mention that the RAM could be a factor, I'll note that they don't let me OC to 1866 anymore. I get a constant beeping after post and no windows boot. I have to restart and reset it back down to 1600. I can test them by removing one at a time and testing OC 1866.

Edit: Ok, so while browsing the overclocking guide thread, i saw some options for the power and whatnot so I decided to take a note of some of them and look at my bios settings for them. I found one for extreme voltage being enabled for under sub-zero temperatures, so I turned that off. Additionally I changed the other power setting similar to that that auto's the Extreme LLC, and put it on medium. So far it looks as if that may have done the trick.

Well so far the heat issue seems to be in order, however occasionally the Corsair Link bugs and freezes the CPU temp at an unrealistically high value. I've seen it freeze at 143C, and 226C, both of which would catch my computer on fire probably. The 226 could almost spontaneously ignite paper. Not sure what causes that to happen.

I had a similar issue with overheating last year, it would go thermal and shut down depending on the game and it would shut down when I was doing encoding after some video editing. Sad thing is I'd have to shut down all but 2 cores so I could finish a video project. After monitoring the system with HWiNFO and keeping an eye on the Corsair Link I saw no general issues with anything and I also recheck the thermal paste and mounting of the H100i. Everything was perfect and clean and I run a push pull with my H100i, after not finding anything I ended up doing a RMA on the H100i as my first step even though everything showed it was running fine. Corsair sent out a new replacement and I have not had any issues after that.
