So here I was taking apart my new ASUS laptop when I spotted a nice mSATA SSD slot and thought to myself "I have to get me one" Does anyone have any recommended mSATA SSD and a place I can order it from?

I don't think so, this one seems to run off the SATA Where as the M.2 PCI2 standard Such as this one http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-XP941-512GB-80mm-PCIe/dp/B00JOSM3TK/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=14268024... however they are coming out with the 951 sometime soon so you may want to wait just a little while.

The upgrade guide states that it runs off of mSATA http://rog.asus.com/376092014/g-series-gaming-laptops/g551-upgrade-guide/. When I opened this laptop I didn't see enough room for the long M.2 SSD

Zuhan, it's not a traditional SSD storage slot, it's only for cache:

"There is a WLAN / Bluetooth combo card (purple) and a slot for the optional mSATA Mini SSD for cache (green). "

"mSATA Mini (Half Size) Slot
An optional 24GB SSD cache resides here (green), which must be spec’d and pre-installed by the retailer at time of purchase. It gives SSD-like performance to HDD/SSHD users, giving a good balance of performance and large storage space."

And, it says it is a retailer installed item... you could call your dealer and ask to supply a 24GB SSD cache card that will fit in the slot.

Well that sucks lol. Being military stationed in Overseas, I don't really have that privilege. OK, next question, any suggested 2tb+ HD you might recommend for this laptop?

Zuhan, for any laptop, especially 15" and smaller, I recommend removing spinning media and replacing with SSD. Draws less power, generates less heat, and make the performance fly.

There are many new 1TB drives available for good prices.

2TB drives are good to put into external USB 3.0 enclosures. Fry's just had a sale on WD Elements USB 3.0 External 2.5" 2TB for $79 WDBU6Y0020BBK-04

Not bad performance:

But, not as good as an SSD would be 🙂

Samsung 840 Pro 512GB on internal SATA III, G750JH

Samsung 850 Pro 512GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-7KE512BW)
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-512GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE512BW/dp/B00LF10KTO/ref=sr_1_2?s=electro...

Much cheaper, the new Crucial budget SSD's, no performance slouches, and from a good company

Crucial BX100 500GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive - CT500BX100SSD1
http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX100-500GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B00RQA6M5Y/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=U...

Because you only have 1 slot, I would go with an SSD, as large as you can swing - save up a little and get the next size up, you have to live with it for a while, might as well get a good size so you can run all your games and content from SSD.

The 2TB drives are pretty slow, and with APM (automatic power management) the heads are always parking and causing lag in games mid game loading content. As cheap external storage they are great, and just as fast on USB 3.0 as they would be installed on the internal SATA III - save that speedy interface for an SSD 🙂

If you get the SSD, you won't have a need for the 24GB cache 🙂

I'd love to go straight SSD but there's only one problem. I've got loads of games and 512gb wont make the cut lol 😛

I mean unless there's a 1tb SSD somewhere out there

Zuhan, both the Samsung 850 Pro and Crucial BX100 links have 1TB options, click on the 1TB selection box 🙂
