Install Guide for Windows 8.1 on G751 freeDOS (no windows out of the box)

RogueNote
Level 9
This guide is for users that did not have Windows 8.1 coming with their G751 laptops out of the box.

If you do have Windows 8.1 already installed on your laptop as soon as you got it out of the box then you can still look at some stuff from utilities you should not install to not have any issues located at the last few steps of this post. One of the most important stuff to do for users that have Windows 8.1 installed is use Asus Backtracker to make a backup of their Windows and recovery partition. http://support.asus.com/download.asp...hashedid=n%2fa
(!) Do not try to do a clean install before making a backup on a USB stick. It's never bad to have the OS how Asus intended it to be as a backup.(This message was for users that do have windows on their laptops.) 😃
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now back to users that do not have a Windows 8.1 installed on their G751.
- First steps of a new user.
After getting it out of the box plug the charger in and leave it for 3 hours to charge before powering it up for the first time. ( says to do so in the manual that comes with it so I did as advised. )
1. Now get your Windows 8.1 DVD in the laptop and wait for the press any key message to load or press the ESC button repeatedly until you get the boot options window.

Use your up and down arrow keys to choose the UEFI:Matsitabd line and press Enter. (Choosing that will avoid the slower boot issue with the flickering upper left corner line.)
Press any key when the message shows up and then just wait for Windows setup to load.

(!) If you do not have a Windows 8.1 DVD and just have the serial key you can make a bootable USB by going here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
Other useful link: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...e-windows.html

2. Select your Language and Keyboard settings and press Next, accept the license agreement, type in your Windows activation Key.

3. Select Install Windows only, then when you get to the partition wizard, delete all the partitions and create a new partition.
If you have a SSD in your laptop and want to install Windows on it make the first partition on the SSD and leave the HDD with no partition.
You can partition the HDD as you wish after windows installs. From what I understand this way is better so Windows won't create boot files on the HDD partition or something like that.
Useful for when you want to partition your HDD: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/repartition-hard-disk#1TC=windows-7

4. After finishing the upper step, wait for windows to get the setup ready and once you pass the Personalise step in Windows Setup
and get to the window where you are able to choose Express Settings or Custom, go for custom.

5. Disable Windows updates by changing the "Automatically get and install updates for drivers" or else you might get Windows to install drivers silently and you don't want that as you will install them yourself from ASUS website to get the right ones.

6. After the upper steps you should be done by now with setting up Windows and be on your Desktop. I suggest a Restart now before doing anything else and after the restart go to Control Panel > Windows Updates and perform an Updates search.
( I tend to go first to Windows Defender and check for updates at it first then go to Windows updates but that
is just a personal preference as I try to make sure I get no failed updates.)

7. Install all selected updates from Important and when they have been downloaded and installed press the Restart button that it shows you. After the restart go back and search again making sure you have no more updates at Important. (Do not select the ones from optional as you might get failed ones if you install them all at once and even when not asked, after an update has been done do a Restart it matters a lot.)
Now go to the Optional ones and install the one that has around 700mb or the biggest one first it might change as they put newer. Restart and go back and install any updates that are left, if there are like just 2-3 install 1 at a time if you are like me and can't stand to see in update history any failed ones.)
If you wanna be safe do a search again to make sure you are not missing any, doing the upper steps should get all updates installed correctly and none failing.

8. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off and check the first box that says
.NET Framework 3.5 and press OK, then when asked where do you want to get them from ,
choose Download from Windows Updates.
After installing and Restarting, search for windows updates again and install any updates that show up after the installation of .NET Frameworks 3.5

9. Restart and get ready to install the drivers from ASUS.
Download the drivers from the below link and install them in the following order. Chipset is recommended always as the first.
Reminder: Please do a restart after each driver has installed especially when it asks you and DO NOT install 2 one after another and then do a restart for both as that can cause issues.

ASUS Drivers link for G751 models: http://www.asus.com/Search/?SearchKey=g751
*01 - Intel Chipset Drivers. (!) Please check 2nd post for instructions you need just for chipset.
*02 - Intel Collaborative Processor Performance Control Driver (You will find 02 to 05 in the Others section )
*03 - Intel Management Engine Interface
*04 - Intel Rapid Storage technology Driver
(For intel rapid storage, right cklick on PNPINST64.exe then right click and choose Run as Administrator and reboot when asked.
After reboot go back to the same folder and right click on IRSTPatch.exe then choose Run as Administrator and reboot again after. It doesn't seem to show anything after you run it so just reboot after.)

*05 - Thunderbolt Driver
*06 - ATK Driver
*07 - Realtek Audio Driver (look at the driver version and make sure it is the latest one to have the audio fix.)
*08 - Realtek LAN Driver
*09 - Intel WIFI WLAN Driver or Atheros or Broadcom depending on your laptop model.
*10 - Intel Bluetooth Driver or Atheros or Broadcom, again depending on your laptop model.
*11 - ASUS Wireless Radio Control
*12 - Genesys Multi-Card Reader Driver
*13 - Elantec Touchpad Driver (When asked for permission please make sure you uncheck the small box in the left or you might encounter it to ask after every reboot, if it asks after the first reboot make sure to uncheck again and it should not ask again.)

*14 - NVidia GeForce Driver ( I did not install this one from the site but from the DVD I got in the box as they are the same
version and it installed it for me without any issues as from the ASUS site I have had an issue with NVIDIA Experience.)
(!) Users recommend having the updated Nvidia drivers so if you want those just Update through Nvidia Experience.

*15 - Download and install the rest from Utilities depending on which you find useful:

01 - ASUS Backtracker (ASUS Backtracker helps you to back up and recover your system's settings)

02 - A entertainment gaming platform to play, connect, create and more ( That would be Steam, I personally got that one from the Steam website. )
03 - ASUS Gaming Center (Launch ASUS apps and easily access settings)
I heard it affects some users WIFI? If anyone has just this installed without Gamersfirst lll please let me know so I can update here if people should get it or not. If you do get it make sure to get the latest version 1.0.5 or whichever is.
04 - ROG Game First III
Not recommended until a fixed one is out as many say it messes with the internet. I have experienced the same issue but only after installing Avast.
05 - ASUS ROG MacroKey (It is a macro, key re-mapper, and automation utility designed to work specifically with gaming notebook)
06 - Keyboard Device Filter Utility ( for the keyboard shortcuts and such if I am right. Recommended.)
07 - ASUS Live Update Utility (Doesn't seem to show anything to me, so not really a necessary thing.)

08 - ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology (Not recommended as it messes with your screen colors, even most users that have it already installed with Windows out of the box tend to uninstall it.)
09 - ASUS USB Charger Plus (Did not install as I have heard it messes up the USB behavior, true?)
10 - PixelMaster Video HDR (from the Others section but not sure what this is or what it does, anyone can explain so i can update here ?)

(!) Chipset instructions, these are the only ones you should install in the following way:
- Extract from zip folder to downloads and rename the extracted folder to something easy like Chip.
- Open Command Prompt (Admin) run as administrator.
- Use the following example to locate the folder:
cd \ (Press Enter)
cd Users (Press Enter)
cd (type your username Example "cd Deadpool") (Press Enter)
cd Downloads (Press Enter)
cd Chip (Press Enter)
Setup.exe -OVERALL -OVERIDE (Press Enter)

Now wait for the setup window to appear and press Next and such and Install and when it finishes if it asks you to restart do so if not do it anyways.
- After restarting to make sure you have everything good download the latest chipset from Intel and install it after the Asus chipset install and restart: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...816&ProdId=816

- Here you just get SetupChipset.exe and put it in downloads and do the same as with the Chipset from Asus but the only difference here is after cd Downloads you type SetupChipset.exe -OVERALL (Press Enter) and wait, press next and install and then Finish and don't forget to restart.

A link to a thread that might help if you got confused of how I explained, there is an example with a screenshot from command prompt: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?57948-nVIDIA-vs-ASUS-drivers-for-GeForce-980M&p=477662&vie...
Special thanks to hmscott for all this information and help given so far. 😃

Thank you for reading so far and I hope all this was of use for you, it's not a professional guide I know but might be useful for users like me that just got this type of laptop and are lost and do hundreds of reinstalls.
Thought I would post all issues and steps I had as a new G751JT user.
Have a great day and happy gaming!

Here is the list of places I look for updates for my G750JH; the best way to get a stable fully functioning G750/G751 is to update all the drivers / apps to the latest Windows 8.1 release.

The G750JW/JX/JH/JM/JS/JZ download areas haven't had new updates for a while, BIOS updates still happen in your model's support area, so check there from time to time.

The G750/G751/551/500/etc share the same basic hardware components; check support download areas for new hardware for newer drivers.

Asus maintains central support areas for hardware component features common to all products, those areas usually have the latest drivers after new hardware releases, sometimes there is a lag before the newer drivers show up there, so still to new product releases support downloads for the latest drivers.

Asus G751 Support / Download areas - Asus hasn't updated all the versions of these support areas, this link discusses the 3 locations were started independantly and not sync'd/updated through to the latest driver releases - check them all to be sure.

This is so much useful for first time g751jy users. I'll be expecting my baby to arrive this monday. I will surely follow most of the instructions set here. Good thing this was stickied. Saves me the hassle to scour all the open threads in the forum. I will update if i find any issues during the break in phase.

+1 to you guys RogueNote & hmscott. Surely makes the transition smooth as possible.

I've had mine for ... exactly 2 weeks today! YAY! Anyways, to the point: i followed above instructions, other then having issues with setting the installation to UEFI mode (which makes no difference other than few more seconds while booting up) - everything went well, and now i can say everything runs smoothly.

After a couple days my partition became not active (message when booting), but i quickly figured out how to reactivate it from cmd on bootable windows installation disk.

If you follow above advice, you should have a nicely working machine 🙂 I downloaded and renamed the files in order night before i got my 751, and when i finally got it i installed windows and had all drivers ready to install from pendrive. Still took couple of hours 😉

I just recently bought a jy version from amazon. Id like to know if they give out codes for the nvidia game bundle akin to purchasing discrete gpu since this laptop has their top of the line mobile gpu aotm. As seen on nvidias site that they are giving away redeemable codes for the witcher 3 etc. For any gpu purchase.

Id really like to save a few bucks if someone can point me to the right direction to claim said promo.

Thanks!

If the laptop box has a sticker of the game, then there should be a card with the downloadable code inside. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have any control over such promos so if there's no sticker, then the model you received isn't part of the promo.

Hello,

My questions are:

Can I use a USB card reader (SD/SDHC/SDXC) and a micro SDXC or Micro SDHC card and backtracker to make a backup of
windows and recovery partition?

Do I need to make two separate backups...one for the windows and one for the recovery?

My existing memory cards were formatted on a win xp 32 system. Do I need to reformat memory card using a 64 bit
computer system in order to make backup drive of win 8.1 & recovery partitions since win 8.1 is 64 bit...and if so...what
software should I use on the G751 to format the memory card?

Any help is truly appreciated. I sincerely apologize for being such a noob. Thank you
