*Newbie ROG Seeking Advice&Tips @ Build

Hello, ROG! So recently I decided to upgrade from a Mac and dive into the world of custom built rigs... I was wondering if my build which cost me a fortune.. (as for most gaming students who spend way too much on textbooks & courses) is a good one or could have been better. Most of everything I picked up was at my local Fry's aside from my Case and Ram (Newegg).. Are there things I should look out for w/ the specific parts I picked out? What could have been better? I don't plan on overclocking.. Originally I was going towards the AMD route because it is def cheaper.. but a friend of mine talked me into going Intel..
Friend: "If you're going to spend that much might as well put in a little more for Intel it's better."
So as you can see I scratched out the AMD parts and went full on Intel costing me about $400 more!
Anyways I'll take any advice, info, tips, etc etc.

My buddy says I don't need a better CPU Cooler... I'm worried about it overheating.. Should I get a better one? Also will the stock fans that come w/ the case be enough?

My Original Plan*********
MOBO ($219.99)- Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z AMD 990x FX AM3+ ATX
CPU ($179.99)- AMD FX 8350 8 Core Processor AM3+

MOBO ($299.99)- Asus Maximus VI Formula Intel Z87 Socket 1150
CPU ($339.99)- Intel Core i7-4790k LGA 1150 4GHz
GPU ($359.99)- Asus Strix GeForce GTX970 DC2OC 4GD5 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support G-SYNC Support Video Card
PSU ($169.99)- Corsair AX860 80+ Platinum
RAM ($139.99)- G. Skill TridentX Series 16GB (2x8GB) 240pin SD Ram DDR3 2133
HDD ($69.99)- (2) Western Digital 1TB Performance 7200 RPM 64MB Black Edition
SSD ($79.99)- (2) Samsung SSD 850 Evo 120GB
Cooling ($34.99)- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Optical Drive ($24.99)- Asus 24x OD (Only bought to install OS)
OS ($NA)- Windows 8.1 Full Version & Mac OSx Yosemite
Monitor ($189.99)- 24" Asus Monitor LED Full HD 1920x1080 1ms Res 80m:1 (2) HDMI (1) VGA

Everything here costed me $2039.87...

Friend: "I could've built a cheaper rig w/ EVGA GTX Titan X. Lol."

I'm a huge Asus fan....

the titan x is a bit OK for a student and he could not build it cheaper whit a titan x since it cost's $999 or so.
the diffrent between i7 and i5 is that i7 have hyper treading ( some games and more coming ( probably ) is going to support it ).
just be shure the formula board have the bios that supports the devils canyon CPU.
OS and just a couple programs on C and use the second ssd for games ( waste of monney to run raid on it ).
backup and large files/programs on the HDD's.

the sticker "may" look like that, it should be around the 24pin contact on the motherboard.
the last 4 letters should show what bios version you have.

and take a read tru this page -> http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?48855-Must-Do-s-for-making-4790K-work-with-Maximus-VI-Mothe...

Thanks guys. For some reason the Maximus Z97 is cheaper than the Maximus Z87 from Frys.. whys that? Any other recommendations for the mobo then? I wouldn't say I don't know much. More like an intermediate user. I've built my cousins rig for him.

why dident you get the z97 in stead of the z87 if it was cheaper? ( unless you figured it out after ).

If already spending that much and it's for gaming, you should consider a 144Hz monitor.
Intel i9 10850K@ 5.3GHz

Corsair H115i Pro XT
G.Skill TridentZ@ 3600MHz CL14 2x16GB

I figured it out after. I returned and got the Maximus VII Hero Z97. To the left is my parts. Missing the G.Skill TridentX. Going to have some fun putting this together. As for the monitor I think this will be fine for now.48514
