Need help for erratic POST

Retired
Not applicable
My rig seems to have a weird problem :

1. Power on after just turning on the wall socket = OK

2. Reboot after normal usage = OK

3. Power on after shutting down for awhile doesn't work, no POST and my Asus Q code is 72 "Pch devices init", VGA_LED on the QLed on board lights up

Kinda weird since my gpu works fine under full load in modern games such as GTA 5 and Dragon Age Inquisition. Please advise bros.

My pc specs are as follows :

4770k
Asus Maximus Hero VII
Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x
Seasonic x1050

Hello loooller and welcome

If you're using windows 8 - 8.1 which has hybrid boot, I'm wondering if it's resuming from sleep and failing. With windows 8 - 8.1 when you shut it down it's actually going to sleep to make booting faster.

Try disabling hybrid boot.

FYI hybrid boot = fastboot in the bios which I found to be problematic.

Tried disabling hybrid boot in Windows 8.1 and now it doesn't POST at all, same Q code of 72. Gonna try reseating my components now

EDIT : Still doesn't POST, ideas anyone?

EDIT 2 : Finally boots and shows Overclocking failed! Why is this error coming out when I am only using optimized defaults?

Q72 = PCH devices initialization

PCH = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_Controller_Hub

To me it would seem a device using the PCH (which could be many) is making it hang there, try having the least amount of components connected. ie 1 storage device , just keyboard / mouse , etc

Different mobo in this thread but OP was using stock settings to setup RAID 1 and got same overclocking failed message, perhaps try a CMOS clear?

If you're not overclocking your cpu the overclocking failed message is more than likely due to your ram. What ram kit do you have? List the specs of it please.

You can also try clearing the cmos or resetting the bios to defaults.

I'm using a Geil Enhance Corsa @ 1600 MHz (it has XMP @ 1866 MHz but I did not enable it as the XMP profile is unstable on this mobo). I previously cleared cmos but was still stuck at QCode 72, might it be one of my hard disks? (I have 4 of em)

The problem seems to have gotten worse, no display at all and still stuck at QCode 72. Might it be a mobo problem?

The components that you're using with this motherboard are they:

i) "known good"?
ii) new or used purchase?

If components are known to be good then it's the mobo at fault or an incompatibility issue.

Are you able to test the components in another motherboard / PC?

All right you gave me some of the specs, how many GB and is it a single kit? (that is to say it's not two combined kits)

I don't see any geil enhance corsa ram 1866MHz.

It's 1600MHz with 9-9-9-28 timings and 1.50v

Dram frequency - 1600MHz
Dram voltage - 1.50v
Timings 9-9-9-28

Try with just one stick and set it manually and see if you can get it to boot.
