Hello gamestoned

Welcome to the ROG forum !

If you're just pure gaming and overclocking, you could go with a maximus build and put the savings towards another 980ti. For 4k gaming you'll want at least two 980ti's to get playable frame rates. 60 FPS is the minimum for the smoothest gaming experience. Adding another 980ti for SLI will all but double your frames per second. if you do add another 980ti you would want to go with a 1000w psu.

This is not an asus monitor but it would make for a nice 4k gaming monitor.

Here are some benchmarks with a single 980ti at 4k.

Hi Nate,

Thanks for the update. I'm thinking of making my rig future proof with X99 & DDR4 do you feel the below spec would be better for 4K gaming. The cost saving is $130 between X99 vs Z97 build mentioned below.

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Asus MAXIMUS VII FORMULA ATX LGA1150 Intel Z97
G.Skill TridentX 16GB (2X8GB) 2400Mhz DDR3
Corsair AX1200i 80+ Platinum Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

The only reason to go with x99 is if you're going 3-way or 4-way sli. The only ROG maximus option would be the maximus vi extreme and it has a plx chip to add the pcie lanes for 3-way 4-way sli, but the plx chip adds a slight latency. X99 with the 5930k or 5960x has the available pcie lanes so no latency.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/luke-hill/intel-core-i7-5820k-haswell-e-6-core-cpu-review/7/

If you went with x99 and the 5960x it would future proof you longer being the 5960x is an 8 core cpu but that is a much more expensive build. The gpu area is where you will notice the performance increase in a gaming pc.

Save yourself a little cash go with a maximus build and add another 980ti for gaming at 4k. You could save a little more cash by going with the hero vii, I'd really like to see you get two 980ti's for 4k gaming. There would be nothing worse than building a 4k gaming pc only to find out you have stuttery gameplay.

Main differences between the formula vii and hero vii

The formula has onboard bluetooth and wifi
10 sata ports instead of 8 on the hero
6 usb 3.0 ports vs. 4 on the hero
The formula has the armor
8 fan headers vs. 6 on the hero
The formula has an 8 pin and a 4 pin cpu power connectors
The formula has the built in water cooling option for the motherboard vrm's
The formula has sata express.

If you get a good 4790k cpu from intel you can overclock it to 4.9GHz - 5.0GHz with an all in one liquid cpu cooler such as the corsair h100i - h110 and the hero vii is capable of that.

I like your choices so far.

or you could wait until august and see what the new ROG hardware that comes out will be.
the new Z170 mobo's will support DDR4 compare to ddr3 on current Z97.
it is a 2 month wait but that is always up to you if you want to wait or not.

New Hardware needs to tested & proven before I'm going to invest in it. Seems like I will go for

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Asus MAXIMUS VII FORMULA ATX LGA1150 Intel Z97
G.Skill TridentX 16GB (2X8GB) 2400Mhz DDR3
ASUS GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB GTX 980 TI-6Gd5 (Will add 2nd one later)
Corsair AX860i 80+ Platinum Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Does this sound like a fine choice. I'm more focused in FPS games like BF3, 4, Hardline, Hitman kind of games. So I would really appreciate if you guys can shed some light on this before I purchase.

The advice on Rog have some of the best people giving it.

The z97 platform have only 16 lanes of pcie bandwidth, with 2 way sli they are used up.

The x99 platform on the other hand has 28 pcie lanes with 5820k and 40 lanes with 5930k and 5960x.

Nvidia needs x8 to operate their cards

What i am getting at is with the new m.2 and sli you will have to go to x99 platform and the same with Nvme pcie x 4

The new Samsung sm951 is a bear of a Nvme m.2 ssd, here is a review

I personally would recommend X99 over Z97 for more future Proof .. You can easily go few years with X99 ..

When it comes to Graphics, I agree with the guys here .. Smooth 4K means 2x 980 Ti cards ..
