G551JW - GPU throttle at 74 degree celsius

Dear all

I bought a G551JW about two weeks ago. At room temperature the laptop stays at 41 degree celsius. As a gaming notebook, I use Furmark to stress test the GPU.

To my surprise the GPU (GTX960M) start throttling at 74 degree celsius - which is meh for a gaming notebook. It is too low for thermal throttle in my opinion. I use the latest Nvidia driver (350.12) and also tried the Asus VGA driver. Both result in thermal throttle at 74 degree.

Is it normal for G551JW guys?

UPDATE 1: It seems that a new beta bios from Asus can fix the thermal throttling policy (i.e., higher temperature before throttling begins). It can be found in this post.

WARNING: As this is a beta bios, it may not work for you. From several attempts in this topic, I conclude that this bios is reasonably safe. The temperature ceiling is raised to 82c. Big thanks to TayTayTheKiller and other members! However, use this bios at your own risks.

Link to beta bios: CLICK HERE

UPDATE 2: Asus has updated the bios on their support page. If you use Windows 8.1 then the link is HERE. The temperature ceiling for this bios is 78c. As the bios revision 204 is official, it is safer than the above beta bios.

Probably won't help you, but GPU throttle temp in 551JM with GTX860M is set to 83C in bios. During gaming it rarely hits 83C, so this is not a problem. With furmark it hits 83C easily and throttles of course.

Rarely hits 83C? What kind of games you play, farmville? Put on GTA 5 and you´ll see how fast it reaches 85C....

This tight-packed 15,6 inch laptops, specially those 1 fan ones like G551, cant just handle the heat with demanding games and throttling is normal. G751 is way more efficient.

Today I replace thermal paste to Coollaboratory Ultra, with stress tests in my G551JW.
I will start separate thread for that. I have modded vbios and my settings for GTX960M (same as GTX860M) are 1400Mhz (GPU) and 1500Mhz (memory). Energy limit is off.
BTW throttling stays at 74C as as I have learnt there is no idea at the moment how to switch it off.

Mickey3 - what is your FurMark result at 1080p? And 3DMark results (Fire Strike)?
And what clocks' settings do you use?

I have just registered to the forum to complain about the same thing. I read about this issue before, however it didn't show up until the last week, when the room temperature reached about 30 C.

If it the previous version with 860m starts throttling at 83C, I cannot see any reason for having 74C in the bios. I am not a tech guy nor a programmer, so I am kind of helpless and I have to rely on the community here. It seems to me that we really need a new bios.

Why ASUS would decide to decrease the performance of the latest version of G551 (with 960m), when it is overpriced compared to the old one with same, underclocked chip (860m) ?

I have solved that by replacing thermal paste (thermal compound) to liquid metal. I have modded bios but still with 74C throttling, but it is not so painful now (my G960M is now about 25% faster than before, reaching almost 2800 at Furmark 1080p and over 4700 at 3DMark at GPU=1400MHz, MEM=1500MHz)

I have found the following post, it seems ASUS sent a beta BIOS to a certain user, on June 1st, raising the temperature threshold to 82C.

I hope they will release it soon.

Hope is the mother of fools. Polish proverb.
I see 2 solutions: (1) to find, where preset of max temp is set in vbios. (2) easier - set clocks for throttled modes to similar, but slightly lower than a GPU regular clock speed.

I do not dare to mess around with vbios 😄 Anyway the 74 C ceiling for GTX960m is ridiculously low as in a gaming laptop. Maybe I will try to contact Asus support or in worst case scenario return the product.

My opinion is same. 85C will be enough for me. Especially problematic is that CPU has throttle at 95C. I wonder if CPU does heat GPU as they share same fan and copper heat bone.
