G74SX-3DE Screen Flickering

Retired

To dstrakele, thanks for the tip 🙂

Hey guys. Been looking through the forums. Could't exactly find my issue, so I shall ask it here if it is not too much to ask. =]

I sent my laptop back for a RMA cause I did a bad BIOS update. =.= sucks. Anyway, it came back and I noticed the only problem it now has is the flickering screen. Before the RMA, the screen was completely fine. It would not even flicker once. Now, it flickers at random times. sometimes black, sometimes white and sometimes static. But only for a split second. I am not sure if it due to the BIOS update or the nVidia driver. I am on 280.26. I had bad experiences with drivers from nVidia, so I do not update them unless necessary. Hahah.

Model: G74S-3DE
BIOS: 203

Tried wiggling the display screen back and forwards. No difference in terms of flickering.

I do not use my battery almost at all. I've been using only my adapter.

Nothing indicated in the "Summary of Administrative Events" in Event Viewer.

Could anyone shed some light on this? Please and thank you. =]

Did you see the Volumouse program I added to the New Drivers thread? It can be set up to allow you to control brightness from your mouse, but it lowers the brightness not by dimming the LED's but some other way and it reportedly bypasses the flickering problem. That's if you have the same type of flickering I'm thinking of.
Read the User's Manual for more info. 😄

JRD1ST, i think this is a completely different problem. Mine flickers what it seems to be a led pulse width modulation. this computer, however, seems to flicker due to the graphics.. flickering white? flickering black? flickering grain? it's not led pulse, it's the nvidia wanting to die IMHO! RMA it, again!

mine never flickered this way!! the games run smoothly (except GTA 4! that SOB never passes the 800x600 resolution so i quit)

I guess the way I would approach this is to figure out if it's a software or hardware problem.

Does the screen flicker with any regularity? I know you said random times but can it go for hours without anything happening or does it always happen every 5 minutes? That sorta deal. Any particular action you take and it happens frequently/all the time?

If it does happen fairly regularly and within a short amount of time, I'd reboot and sit on a BIOS screen and see if it happens with no OS loaded. 🙂 That way you narrow it down to something physically wrong vs a software install.

Also, what does the flickering look like? Can you FRAPS it and post a short Youtube video?

Does it happen only when your brightness is below a certain level?

Here's a good one of PWM flickering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=pl7EWrvyAcs
...and it is accompanied by nice music.

Hahah. Thanks guys for the whole bunch of info. But to answer some of them, mine flickers at truly random times(it sometimes flickers once in an hour, sometimes 3 in a row). Sometimes I am playing games, sometimes when I am surfing the web and when I watch a video.

And to 380mcn, no, my screen does not flicker as such. Not to that extreme thankfully. Hmm... mine flickers at random parts of the screen as well (the grains)

The brightness settings on my laptop is at the maximum at all times. I haven't tried the volmouse driver, but I don't think it involves brightness since my settings is already at max.

Thanks guys for being very informative. =] Appreciate it.
