Went through to the installation process, got to about 25% and restarted as per the upgrade said it would. Then failed, went through recovery process and put me back into my windows 8.1 desktop......
The error message said there was a failed boot. Has this happened to anybody else?

My upgrade failed on 32% overall progress, during the Installing functions and drivers 5% phase. I had BSOD on every reboot. Pressing F9 and then rebooting eventually fixed that and I recovered to fully functional Win 8.1.

Okay ignoring the fact that you keep posting that tip on every comment. In the end what worked was putting the laptop on airplane mode, so there was no interference from wifi. The upgrade ran through perfectly, and i just had to fix up some updates after i got the wifi up and running upon completion

My installation failed multiple times in the same way as yours, and I have seen others experience the same issue. I know you managed to resolve it by disabling wifi, but what I found the problem to be was actually the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.

Simply updating it to the most recent one from the Intel site [ https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST- ] and attempting the installation again should fix it for most people.

As you've noticed, disabling wifi helps as well, but not in all cases. I"m not quite sure why [it didn't work for me >_<] but yeah.

So you have the Intel HM87 Express chipset also ?
And you ran this ? https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25165/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-RAID-Driver... ?

Continual failures for me and I sat through the process numerous times hoping I was special. Lol. For me the process was freezing at 32% overall progress and 5% features and drivers. I followed all of the advice here and the process completed without a hitch. I stop the firewall, updated the RST driver and put the laptop in airplane mode. Something in that triad did the trick.

guess i got lucky

Mine installed ok

I did not touch it once it began as i was too busy doing work on my other Asus laptop

did see the progress bar working and a few reboots

but long after it finished i touched it

so far seems ok except a few things need tweaking

some drivers either need to be updated or reinstalled i guess
