Hi, was going to build a pc around the x97 mb with a i7 4790k, but will new cpu's be made for this mb now, or will all future cpu's be for the x99 mb, and is the z170 just a stop gap mb, or will new cpu's be made for that also, what i am trying to ask, what mb to go for to last at least 5 years for gaming, cheers

the Z97 is another socket compare to Z170 ( same line up but diffrent year and sockets ).
the Z97 ( LGA1150 ) is last year's motherboards, and Z170 ( LGA1151 ) is the motherboards coming out now.
the X99 is based on the LGA2011 socket.

the Z line of motherboards are coming out whit a new gen every year ( motherboard and CPU's ) and whit diffrent sockets at times.

the X line of motherboard have been following the LGA2011 socket ( not shure if there is changes on the socket it self ).
and i think they release a new motherboard every 2-4 years ( depending on intel ).

X99 is on 2011-3 and there are changes, DDR4 memory compatibility for starters.

CPU's for X79 cannot be used on X99 boards - though they both have 2011 in their socket name.

CPU's for Z97 and Z170 are not interchangeable either.

Depend of money. Nicest, best build and most expensive is Rampage 5 Extreme with DirectCU cooling on VRM for Intel Xtreme.
If you want little cheaper platform than Z170. Maximus 8 Hero or Maximus 8 Gene.
Now is DDR4 actual and no reason to buy older platform. Any Intel i7 have enough CPU power and older models, but Z170 platform is biggest improvement of all Intel i7 processors. Sandy, Ivy, Haswell all of them offer something new, but not even close to Z170 platform. i7-4790K on Z97 or i7-6700K on Z170 never mind, both of them will work on 20-30% in new games with most expensive graphic cards but Z170 is better because other things...Chipset is better and DDR4 2133 default speed compare to DDR3 1333. Anyway on Z170 you can change memory for 2 years when 3000MHz C9 kits become available. Platform will support. Z97 is lock on DDR3.
You should wait only 1-2 months because now is i7-5820K with 6 core X99 cheaper than i7-6700K 4 cores.
Example i7-5820K, ASUS X99-PRO USB3.1 and GSkill memory could cost you only little more than Z170 platform.
That's my recommendation for you 5820K/PRO/U.3.1/Ripjaws 4 2800 4x4.

I'm very angry on ASUS because they made X99 motherboard with Internal USB 3.1 but nor R5E.
I mean with USB 3.1 you are much calmer even if it's not necessary this year at all.

ive had my Z77 for 3 years and stil going good. ( signature )

only thing you need to change is the GPU one or 2 times ( depends on you and games you plays ).
it all comes down to how mutch you want to spend on it, and what resolution for example.
if you are going single 4K monitor, you will need a titan x card or 2x 980ti's to get around 60fps/HZ.
or multi 4K monitor? well you need a bit more GPU power.

i would say a 27" and 2560x1440P resolution would be good for a gaming setup, you have the g-sync monitors too if that is of enny interest.
a single 980ti for good fps, 2 cards for overkill ( and bragging rights ).

Will be useing my 1080P tv as monitor like i do now, so i bought a 2nd hand 780ti and told that will be more than enough, but i just need the cpu and motherboard, so deciding on what to get as there are 3 choices now.

Might as well go with the z170 (maximus viii formula or hero) and the 6700k cpu, it's the newest and cost about the same as a z97 board. The g.skill trident z ram will go nice with the z170 motherboard.

Thats exactly what i think i may go with, i think the 6700k is also as good as the i7 4790k aint it ? plus i get the other benefits also from the new motherboard features.
