    256gb SM951 nvme slow read/write speed after 10 mins in Windows 10

    Hello all,

I am after some insight/advice really if possible :-)

I have 256gb SM951 nvme along with my new motheboard and 6700k :-D However after setting up and installing Windows 10 I notice slow read/write speeds after 10 mins when using Crystal Disk Mark. If I do the benchmark straight after startup I acheive these results:

    Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 2198.692 MB/s
    Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 1286.696 MB/s
    Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 833.381 MB/s [203462.2 IOPS]
    Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 386.787 MB/s [ 94430.4 IOPS]
    Sequential Read (T= 1) : 1600.030 MB/s
    Sequential Write (T= 1) : 1268.911 MB/s
    Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 58.129 MB/s [ 14191.7 IOPS]
    Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 221.263 MB/s [ 54019.3 IOPS]

    Test : 1024 MiB [C: 16.6% (39.5/237.5 GiB)] (x5) [Interval=5 sec]
    Date : 2015/08/25 17:47:50
    OS : Windows 10 Professional [10.0 Build 10240] (x64)

But if I run the test 10 mins later I see totally different results (Alot slower):

    Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 86.308 MB/s
    Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 41.791 MB/s
    Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 42.587 MB/s [ 10397.2 IOPS]
    Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 20.787 MB/s [ 5075.0 IOPS]
    Sequential Read (T= 1) : 86.199 MB/s
    Sequential Write (T= 1) : 41.738 MB/s
    Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 25.061 MB/s [ 6118.4 IOPS]
    Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 20.702 MB/s [ 5054.2 IOPS]

    Test : 1024 MiB [C: 17.0% (40.3/237.5 GiB)] (x5) [Interval=5 sec]
    Date : 2015/08/25 18:42:05
    OS : Windows 10 Professional [10.0 Build 10240] (x64)

I have a feeling the throttle may be down to excess heat as I know these drives run hot. The thing that confuses me is that even after restart and no data load I will still see the same poor results after 10 mins. So the drive is throttling after 10 mins without any load?!?!?!

Any help will be greatly appreciated :-D Thanks Dan

Throttling, but it's weird that it stays that way after reboot, maybe the drive did not cool down?

I am experiencing the exact same issue with my Hero VIII with 6700k and SM951 nvme drive. I put heatsinks on the samsung drive and measured the temps they dont get above 31c. Its definitely not heat related to the hard drive. I have been doing tests for the last 2 days to isolate the problem but have been unsuccessful.

I've your same configuration as the SM951 OS Drive without any trouble.

    What BIOS are you using?

Hi all thanks for the responses,

Desmond86 after some further testing I am almost 100% sure that the throttling is not occurring due to excess heat. fordsvt11 I am sorry that you are suffering with the same issue :-( Hopefully we will both sorted soon though! Please keep me updated if you find a solution or have any more information.

m4x2012 the bios version is 0401 please can you let me know your bios version to, thanks. Are you running the nvme version of the sm951 as well?

    Thanks
    Dan

I've the lastest one, 0508 and I confirm the SSD is installed in the M.2 slot.

I am also running bios #508. Looking at m4x2012 specs it appears he has the ahci verson of the drive.
I spent a couple more hours trying to figure it out without any luck pountney.

I guess we will have to wait for someone else to come up with any ideas. As you said you are running the latest bios I guess we can rule that one out.

What do you mean by AHCI?

I've installed it in the M.2 slot and it's recognized as PCI-e peripheral (not SATA)

There are 2 versions of this drive, AHCI and Nvme. I have a AHCI version and it runs at full speed, my Intel 750 in the bottom pcie slot does not reach the speeds that it did on my RVE, I have removed my SM951 to see if that helped and the speed increased somewhat but not to rated speeds. Not sure if there is an issue with Nvme drives on the Hero or not
