ASUS Rampage IV Extreme and i7 4960X BIOS problem.

Hi,

I'm new here, and first time ROG product owner, so sorry if break the forum rules.
I have problem with this configuration.

Mobo: Rampage IV Extreme BIOS 1404.
CPU i7 4960X.

My mobo doesn't start with this CPU, no POST, red LED CPU error flash.

My original mobo BIOS is 1404,
BIOS compatible with i7 4960X is 4310 and up.
BIOS upgrade is needed.

What is done.

1. Download Rampage-IV-Extreme-CAP-Converter.ROM,
2. Change file name to R4E.ROM.
3. No POST so I use USB BIOS Flashback,
4. Format USB Flash drive to FAT32, copy R4E.ROM,
5. Mobo in standby,
6. Put USB flash drive to white usb port, press and hold ROG button.
7. ROG LED flash several minutes and turn off, everything is OK as in the manual.
9. After installing Rampage-IV-Extreme-CAP-Converter.ROM BIOS version is 2105 still my CPU don’t work,
11. BIOS upgrade is needed,
12. Download Rampage-IV-Extreme-ASUS-4901.CAP,
13. Rename to R4E.CAP
14. Delete from USB Flash drive old R4E.ROM file,
15. Copy R4E.CAP to the same USB Flash drive,
16. Mobo in standby,
17. Put USB flash drive to white usb port, press and hold ROG button,
18. ROG LED flashes 4 times and turn off. Upgrade Error,
19. Copy R4E.CAP to diferent FLASH Drive the same issue.
20. If I copy any of the ROM files to the USB flash drive it works, but not with CAP files even after installing Rampage-IV-Extreme-CAP-Converter.

Is it possible to upgrade BIOS from 1404 to 4109 without CPU, MEM,Graphic Card (system boot up)?
Is conversion from ROM to CAP works without CPU, MEM,Graphic card?

I found this tutorial https://www.asus.com/en/support/FAQ/114645/
and i found this interesting "The system will reboot twice. After that, the conversion to .CAP BIOS structure is completed."

i found this movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxEMcSTfbIE
and there is a difference beween normal BIOS upgrade and conversion, after conversion and boot up the system also update EC firmware. I can't boot after conversion, is this my problem ?

I’ve got Kingston DataTravel 2GB USB 2.0 is it ok ?

Is it possible that pen-drive works with the ROM files and does not work with CAP ?

What is my mistake ????

If You have any suggestions please let me know.
I spend couple days on this problem and I'm out of ideas.

P.S. Sorry for my english this is not my native language.

Hello jaroo111

Welcome to the ROG forum.

Follow this guide using the bios flashback method, you want to rename the file to R4E.CAP

Let us know if this gets you going.

Thanks for answer Natel152.
I know this tutorials and movies very well.
I fight with my problem maybe a week now, so i search web very deeply.

In this material everyone doing upgrade from ROM to ROM or CAP to CAP or convert only.
My problem is to make a convert without CPU and then CAP upgrade.
I can't boot up my system after conversion because the version of BIOS after conversion is still to old.
ASUS should make a new conversion file with 4901 BIOS not 2xxx old crap.

I have ONE simple question, is the system boot up needed after conversion to read CAP files for future upgrades to 4901 BIOS ???

P.S. I have changed the files names just like in the tutorial.

Sorry for my english.:o

if your pc is still not starting after updating the bios, what code does the motherboard stop on when you try to boot?

Yes, you need to run the CAP converter first....1404 is bios before CAP converter

Yes...system boot up is necesary...After running converter you need to power on PC and let the BIOS update...finish....then update to latest BIOS

https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/114645/

Try this for usb drive if cap convert seems not to be working..i.e. bios flashback method is not working...http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?46802-please-i-need-help-with-Rampage-Extreme-iv&p=398383&v...

Alternatively buy a couple new BIOS chips for your board.. http://www.bios-chip24.com/epages/63730052.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/63730052/Products/6995

Hi Arne Saknussemm,
At last someone understand me 🙂
To solve this problem I need a old CPU compatible with 1404 BIOS to update my board, or buy new BIOS chip ?
Because I can't boot my system after conversion (to old BIOS attach to conversion) the CAP files are not working ?
Is there any problems when I buy new BIOS and skip the updates done with boot after conversion ?

Suggestion for ASUS: MAKE A NEW CONVERSION FILE WITH NEWEST BIOS or latest one with all CPU compatibility.
Thanks for everything.

Yes, seems you would need a SB-E CPU to borrow for the upgrade to CAP...

Or replace BIOS chips....which is easy enough. they are not soldered in just pull out push in...carefully.

Maybe local computer shop can "lend you" a SB-E for 10 minutes? for a couple of bucks?...

Hi guys,
I just buy i73820 just for update my board becouse i can't find lga 2011 CPU to borrow.
Everything seems to be fine now.
The facts: system boot up is necessary...After running converter, PC must boot up to update iROG chips. After this CAP files works just fine.
I test my system and I'm not happy in cinebench my system is worst ten i73920K, it has 1017 points. I found results with 1200 points with i74960X without overclocking.
Any suggestions.
Is there a BIOS setting best for my CPU and memory RipjawsZ 8x4 GB 2400MHz. 10-12-12-31-2N
