G74Sx Corsair Vengeance Memory

Woo Hoo and the news today is that Corsair have brought out their Vengeance branded High Performance memory to notebooks, with the release of three memory upgrade kits, 2x 8GB and 1x 4GB see here for more details and speeds http://www.corsair.com/memory-by-product-family/vengeance.html Now the ? is which ones do I get, as these are not yet available in the UK, I'll have to import them 😞 Actually ignore that comment, as Scan.co.uk are offering them to pre-order 🙂 ? now is do I go for the modules with a CAS of 10-10-10-27 or the standard modules with a Latency of 9-9-9-24 mmmmmm.

Not really sure that I would need the higher latency speeds though and the standard modules can run upto 1600mhz, where as the others will run upto 1866mhz. The other aspect of course is the cost, being christmas and all as well as the new ASUS Transformer Prime hitting the UK mid Jan, pre-orders already in 🙂 I hate being a tech geek, lol. Though I suppose if i go for the standard modules at 9-9-9-24 I suppose I could then opt for the 60GB OCZ SSD I've got my eyes on for my OS http://www.ebuyer.com/225415-ocz-60gb-vertex-2e-ssd-oczssd2-2vtxe60g-oczssd2-2vtxe60g

I welcome other ROG user's thoughts and opinions 🙂

Sandy Bridge memory controllers give diminishing returns for memory speeds higher than 1333MHz, and almost no returns above 1600MHz. (see http://www.anandtech.com/show/4503/sandy-bridge-memory-scaling-choosing-the-best-ddr3/8 for summary). I think spending $$ on memory above 1600 MHz is not the wisest, especially since a SSD will give you a performance boost that you'll compare to a kick in the pants. 1333MHz will do just fine.

Besides, the problem is the BIOS on the G74. It is hardcoded to work only up to 1333MHz if all slots are full. There are people here that have gone with 1600MHz and 1866MHz SODIMMs and have gotten them to work with 2x4GB installed, but no-one here has gotten a G74 to run these at advertised OC speeds with 16 GB installed. Until we get a new BIOS, using 16GB of this premium RAM only comes with the premium price, i'm afraid.

I have however just discovered through a gamble that the G74 is happy to host 32GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 in it! I have 4x8Gb of the http://www.corsair.com/memory/notebook-memory-upgrades/value-select-8gb-ddr3-sodimm-memory-kit-cmso8...
stuff. Its overkill for most users, but I can find ways of filling it up!

Thanks fostert for the info. Thinking be best go for the 1600mhz , then as like you say when ASUS can be bothered to give us another BIOS update I can then go for the 1866mhz Vengeance modules. Bit more research in order, might head over to CustomPC (where I found out about the Vengeance SoDimms, Jan 2012 Issue). Love Corsair Memory, had their XMS2 Dominator Modules in my first PC build (overclocked to 1.18ghz and CAS 5-5-5-15, thanks in part to the Dominator AirFlow Fan), so wouldn't mind getting their new Vengeance modules in my G74Sx in the new year 🙂 Thanks for the input tho chap, much appreciated.

Not at'al mate. Yes, I too fancy Corsair memory, and not just for the performance. Once got some sticks from them for my desktop (1600 CL 7-7-7-20 Dominator GTX) that turned out to fail memtest. Without question and within a couple days they had shipped me a new kit, complete with a new Airflow fan, and let me keep the old one! Incredible customer support. I only hope that if my G74 starts acting up ASUS RMA would be as good...alas thats not what I've heard.
