5820k and m.2 ?

Hi guys,
I have a friend with a Rampage 5, a 5820k and a GTX980Ti .
He wanted to install his OS on an m.2 drive.

He pretends, it's impossible due to pciexp lanes limitations. Not clear if due to the only 28 lanes of that CPU or to the 16 lanes used by the GPU.

I did search the internet and easily found reviews stating the contrary, but does any of you actually run such a system ?

And how did you do it ?

Thanks

Claude

No problem at all. Even the fastest M.2 drive uses only 4 PCIe lanes. Just make sure your friend is getting a PCIe M.2 SSD and not a SATA M.2 SSD. People confuse them a lot. 😛

Yeah, this could be it, he has a Samsung Evo,
Thanks 🙂

Then you should have him return it to the store. As far as I know, the XP941 and SM951 are the only Samsung PCIe M.2 SSDs that are currently available on the market.
