How long should i charge a new G74SX Battery for?

It's automatic. Just keep it plugged in and it will stop charging at 100% and start again when the battery falls below 95%.
Read the User's Manual for more info.

A related question to the OP - probably something that the OP will want to know as well - is it advisable to keep the Laptop plugged in to AC power all the time? I've heard some people say that it bypasses the battery and uses AC power so really there is no damage done but others proclaim that it shortens the battery life.

until battery reaches below 95%.. and then it starts to charge AGAIN.
Batteries (even without use) are always discharging a small amount, so from 100% to 95% it doesn't take long..

my laptop is 99% of the time plugged without the battery (which is stored in a dry place with the charge at 50%)

It won't shorten it appreciably. The charge cycle statistics you see for batteries are for a full discharge & recharge. So if it's only losing 5% and then charging you will get many many more of those mini charge cycles than is listed in the specification. Plenty of people keep it plugged in so it's always ready to go with no ill effects.

So if i leave the charger charged in to the laptop even at 100% will it damage my g74?

No, it won't damage it. It has built in protection.

I like to leave it in not only to have it ready to go mobile and save my data in case of a power outage, but also the fact the the battery acts as one of the feet of the notebook, and without it in there the lack of support in that area very mildly twists the chassis. Call me paranoid, but this is a heavy notebook, and flex in any part of it can't be helpful.
