m.2 pcie adapter and x79
I've just been reading about ASUS HYPER M.2 X4, which looks good.
I'm guessing it will not boot on x79.
I was also looking at the Kingston HyperX Predator M.2 PCIe SSD (which apparently is bootable on x79 because of its OROM).
Was wondering if anyone knows why one PCIe M.2 adapter/ssd combo can boot and one can't?
I've read that the M.2 SSD requires the correct OROM to be bootable, and the adapter card doesnt play a role.
Does this mean the M.2 ssd from the Kingston Predator could be used with the Asus adpater to get higher speeds while still being bootable?
edit: I have a Rampage IV Black Edition (LGA 2011 - x79) motherboard by the way.Last edited by John_Au; 10-23-2015 at 02:28 AM.

Yes, the adapter is passive, and doesn't play a role.
Yes, the SSD needs onboard OP ROM to show up in BIOS/ work as boot drive
Yes, the kingston and asus adapter should work.
keep in mind that only ACHI SSD's will work, as the X79 does not support NVME.
