Hey, while switching my hdd i noticed something like this coming out of from my asus rog g750js. Is it something potentially dangerous? What would you recommend? http://i.imgur.com/BpWuQB9.jpg

It won't hurt at all. Thermal paste used is not electrical conductive so no harm will be done, you can be sure.

I think the bigger question i had to ask is if it could hurt the laptop. Should i do anything about it? I sent ticket to asus support and they recommended sending it for repair. Do you think i could just clean it a bit and that's it? Its texture is like thermal paste. Im sure someone here knows what is behind that specific spot.

It's hard to tell from that pic, but it might not even be TIM. It could be a drop of resin or a smear of adhesive, just a bit of ugly sloppiness at the assembly plant. All sorts of strange plasticky chemicals get used when working with PCBs.

Even if it is a TIM, it could easily be an extra drip from a messy worker. I wouldn't even suspect it somehow leaked off an important component (because such leakage is near impossible) unless actual temps measured under performance seem unacceptable.

If Asus already approved the RMA and you can live without the laptop for a little while then I say go for it, let them fix the problem for you.

I don't think it's a real problem, but it is an expensive device and you did pay a premium for Asus support so go ahead and use it, lol.

Yeah i've got a desktop but im thinking if it really is that big of a deal... not even sure if it's gonna ship out of the country, which im afraid of, since they were talking my language (finnish) pretty bad.

Hehe, excuse my lateness.. but don't worry. The 'thermal paste' (yes, exaggerated) is actually a big splotch of heat displacing goo or what ever it is. It's fine and won't damage your circuitry at all. It won't run, trust me.

If you want to see how it looks, check it out! 😜

Thank you for your post it was helpful. I asked on my country's pc games related forums and they told me about a company in my country that can fix these kind of laptops. I thought i'd send it anyway to check if something else is potentially wrong. Haven't touched inside of it since i bough it mid 2014. I'd like to keep my machines running as long as i can 😉
