Excited to buy my friend an ASUS laptop!

A group of my friends all chipped in together to buy our friend a laptop for her birthday. Naturally I did the shopping since I'm the geekiest computer nerd in the group. It was looking like I might have to fight the Black Friday crowds for a cheap laptop because we had a somewhat modest budget. But then an ASUS laptop pops up on Amazon a few days ago for $400! Granted it's not top of the line but it still has excellent ASUS build quality and all she needs is a basic computer.

I just got the shipping notification from Amazon so it will be here in plenty of time. 🙂

Now I just have to decide whether I should open the box and get an A/V, OpenOffice, etc pre-installed for her or let her have the experience of opening it first. Hrmm.

Oh, I guess the battery won't come with a charge so if I want her to be able to turn it on I will have to pre-charge it?

I would just hook it up with all that stuff prior. That way there's no messing with it later. If you need any programs let me know I have a few that are good!:)

Her needs are pretty simple, just productivity and social networking so probably FireFox, OpenOffice, and Avast! will work fine. I'll also make sure Acrobat, Java, etc are all loaded. Her daughter will be using it too but I'll let her decide if she wants parental controls. She is a very attentive parent so I don't think they will be necessary.
