I am pretty sure this thing is over heating.

I just left it for half hour and powered it up again and it booted in to the BIOS no with no issues. I watched the BIOS CPU temp monitors climb up to around 80 degrees C at which point the machine shut down again...

    Any idea's on fixing this?

I cleaned the cooler and the CPU off and re-applied some new TIM. There looked to be plenty. I am wondering about the cooler though.....
Does the solid block bit in the middle of the cooler need to cover the whole of the CPU surface? The solid plate part of the cooler that sits on the CPU is a fair bit smaller than the CPU itself. Part of the CPU is covered by just the fins of the cooler.... Doesn't look right to me

As several of us have mentioned before, heat dissipation is a MAJOR issue with that CPU series (9000+). There is almost no air cooler on the market which will adequately cool it - the ones that will cost about the same as an all-in-one water cooler from EK, Cooler Master, etc.

If you are using a small air-cooler which might have come with the CPU or with another CPU like the FX-8350, then PLEASE replace it with a liquid cooling system.

    Thought so....

As this is not my rig... and the owner/builder is now skint Will a beefy replacement air cooler do the trick? If so which one?
The cooler that was in situ looked pathetic! and the CPU temp just kept climbing when I could get it to boot. I know 80 degree aint that high but...... Where would it have ended? The machine was idle for goodness sake. What is the normal operating temp for these chips?
sorry I'm not well versed in AMD

Yes that would but.... We need a cheaper alternative. Also the crappy case this thing is based in will not fit such a fab but large cooler radiator unfortunately

If not an all-in-one liquid cooler like the one triangle linked, then you MIGHT be able to get away with something like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.

But, there are no guarantees that even that will do it - the 9000 series CPUs really need to be liquid cooled - there are some cheaper all-in-one coolers, but they may not do it either.

Your friend might need to consider swapping the FX-9370 out for an FX-8350, and then cooling that with the air cooler I linked or one like it.

    Thanks for the advice....
I am pulling my hair out with this...
I offered to build this rig for the fella but he went out to computer fair and had a go himself.........

    Don't get me started!

Next thing I know he's asking me to sort out his failed build.
Everything was wrong with this build. He bought the fastest hottest running AMD chip he could and plugged it in to the cheapest kit he could find.

I've replaced the mobo and PSU so far...
    I'm gonna kill the kid

would one of the single radiator coolers do it such as the Corsair H60?
I can't get a double radiator in to the case
