I have been having this same issue. It is very random as to when it happens. I am on a Maximus VIII Formula with the latest bios. I have tried all of the bios versions with no change. I have reformatted the system and ran it with and without AI Suite 3, but I am still having issues. I have seen somewhere in this forum about XHCI hand off, is this something that can be enabled without issue in Windows 10?

I've rarely encountered this problem since i uninstalled AI suite however....

It will often fail to shut down when I have (or have had) an external hard drive plugged into either of the USB ports next to the Ethernet socket.
I don't know if that helps to narrow it down but thought I'd add it to the thread just in case.

Also ASUS please dedicate some more resources to solving this issue it's been around for far too long.

Turning off Thunderbolt solved my shutdown problem.

I figured out that the problem is gone when I disable the Intel Thunderbolt/USB3.1 Controller in UEFI. At the Moment I'me counting about 28 successful shutdowns.....
Thank you so much for posting this. I have been having a problem with my Z170-Premium mother board where when I tell it to shutdown the screen goes dark, but the computer does not shut down. I have tried every idea I could find, yours, to disable thunderbolt, is the first to really work. I must add, that for me, to make the machine turn off properly, in addition to disabling Thunderbolt, I had to disable "Turn on Fast startup" in the Windows 10 power options.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but is there any definitive solution to this problem yet?

I have a similar case to some people on this thread in that my PC with a Maximus VIII Impact tends to get stuck on the shut down loop. My GPU does stop displaying an image on my monitor though. I feel like I've tried almost everything in this thread only to find that the best solution is to disable USB 3.1, which is pretty disappointing because I would like to have a functioning USB 3.1 and Type-C port. If it wasn't for that, I would have just settled with a Z170I Pro Gaming or something.

    Hi matchadoabout

Welcome to the ROG forum !

If you're using AI Suite III try uninstalling it from your programs and run this cleaner.

    http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread...te-III-Cleaner

My pc won't shut down if it's not completely stable specifically the ram, if you're not using AI Suite III try raising a few voltages.

On the extreme tweaker tab try:

    CPU VCCIO voltage 1.20v - 1.25v
    CPU System Agent voltage 1.20v - 1.25v

If it still isn't shutting down try the Dram voltage at 1.40v - 1.45v

Let us know if this helps.

Tried those voltages and have had no luck so far. I also don't have AISuite III installed and have used that cleaner.

I had a problem with the computer shutting down but then turning itself back on whenever it felt like it. I looked through the forums from people saying turn on ErP (S5) to people saying alter power settings in Windows (10 by the way). Nothing seemed to work but then I found that Windows 10 doesn't shut down properly but goes into a hybrid sleep mode so I turned this off and disabled quick boot, viola, it shut down and stayed off. I don't know what version of windows you are on but if on 10 try disabling the said quick boot and see if it shuts down for you.

I tried disabling hybrid sleep and quick boot the other day. I thought it worked. Two shut downs later and it stopped shutting down properly again. I'm also sure I tried the S5 option in the motherboard to no avail. I might try it again one of these days. I'm on Windows 10 by the way.

The thing about this problem is it is relatively hard to trigger this issue. I either have to heavily stress my PC or keep it on the whole day to make sure I can prevent a shut down, but once it starts, I can trigger it continuously until I rest my computer for awhile. As I mentioned before, disabling USB 3.1 and Type-C from the BIOS allows proper shut down, but I would very much want to keep this functionality.
