I found the bottom 2 USB ports best for keyboard and mouse for me when the board was first released, I have no idea if a bios update changed anything in that regard

I do find I am having almost 5c higher temperature spikes now than I was when I was on 1701 a week ago, though I have done a lot of stress tests since then. Never ran over 83c though. Is that really enough to degrade the thermal paste that much?

I may wind up going back to 1701 and test to see if temps go back down. If they are still that high, then I've just burnt up the paste and I'll revert to 1902 Modded, otherwise I'll stay with 1701 for lower temps.

Unknown. I have a Das Pro 4 keyboard in the ROG KeyBot USB port (running KeyBot), a Logitech G502 mouse in the adjacent USB port, an ancient Logitech G15 keyboard in another USB2 port, lots of removable storage devices swapping in and out of various USB2/USB3 ports. No noticeable change between 1701 and 1902 - the primary keyboard (and its pass-through USB3 hub) and KeyBot still always work perfectly, the Logitech keyboard and mouse are still a bit flakey (unresponsive, sluggish, locked keys/LED/volume controls) when powering up from sleep until the LGS driver software kicks itself on a few seconds after Windows user logon, USB drives sometimes drop out (and back in) while Win7/Win10 settles in at start. Similar behaviour with my linux mint, except the basically functions of the Logitech keyboard/mouse immediately work but the advanced functions take a while to initialize, and USB drives aren't available until the OS properly mounts them.

Okay, I just rolled back to stock 1701, and I am definitely seeing a 4c-5c difference in OCCT temps between unmodded 1701 and modded 1902. Under 1701 my max temperature spike is in the 74c range (might hit 75c), and under modded 1902 I hit 79c. The average running temp is lower by the same amount too. I don't know if the increase in heat is coming from the 1902 part or the modded part. If it's the modded part, it might explain why Asus hasn't updated the microcode.

I've already swapped BIOS's about 6 times in the last couple of days. Not sure I'm ready to again for a bit. Anyone else in a position to do a heat comparison between 1701 and 1902, and between unmodded and modded of either version?

Here are the settings I applied in both runs, by the way.

    44x100
Vcore: Adaptive total 1.25v, reaches 1.28v in OCCT
    Vcache: Adaptive auto
Input voltage: 1.9v (droops to 1.87 in OCCT)
Memory at XMP settings: 2666 Mhz 15/15/15/35
    LLC 7
    Disabled VR Fault Management
    Disabled CPU and DRAM Svid
    Disabled Internal PLL Overvoltage
CPU and DRAM Power Phase Control: Optimized

I did not see any difference between the old bios and 1902 modded about the temperature, maybe lower with the modded 1902

    tistou77:

Which do you mean by "old bios"? 1701? 1801? From my findings the change could've been between 1701 and 1801, we don't know at this point. But the difference between stock 1701 and modded 1902 is dramatic.

EDIT: I should add, I did not see any difference in the final well known voltages in OCCT. Vcore goes to 1.28v in both, Input goes down to 1.87 in both. Vcache stayed around 0.950. If any one of the dozen or two more obscure voltages changed, tho, I didn't notice.

I decided to try unmodded 1902. Temps are the same as in 1701. This would imply that the difference is between modded and unmodded.

    Must be the microcode then.
