G751JY - HEATING PROBLEMS SOLVED (partially, hopefully fully tonight) !

i gotta answer this since probably many still face the G751JY heating issues. - it's TLDR but i recommend reading - we might be ON A WAY TO A SOLUTION!

so there i was, playing CSGO one day (3 days ago) and i noticed some stutter (a bit) and it felt wierd that 4860HQ / 980M + ssd machine has stutter. i've had no viruses, nothing, and it stutters. so i opened speccy AND DID I HAVE SOMETHING TO SEE. CPU temp 96°C, and grpahics almost 80°C.

so natrually i'm like - WTF - i mean come on, csgo is an old game that shouldn't even fart a problem on this machine, it should eat the game alive. so i did prime+furmark test - temps went to 95°C and throttling was detected, almost around 18%. so.. what now?

i've downloaded aida64 extreme and opened to see cpu fan speed, and noticed they have some benchmark that measures (even if not benchmarking) temps, to use it for diags. well i run their diag aswell - i get the same - 95°C cpu, 80 °C gpu - throttling, 18% (aida can measure how much you throttle). Anyway i've been using latest bios 211, latest nvidia 361.43, and so on.. updated all drivers. windows 10 ofc, with all updates and ****.

so.. what now?
First thing - before i've updated to 361.43 i didn't have any termal problem, i kept my pc clean and there is probably maybe 5% dust inside, i've been cleaning PC but still it gets hot. So my natural thinking - driver issue / bios issue / paste/dust.

So i cleaned dust - blowed a couple of times into dust vents (nothing came out since they're obviousyl clean :), tested again - temperatures are still high. then i've read somewhere that reseting defaults in bios fixes those problems - so i did that. and guess what? nothing happened. i've yet to try bios downgrade (if it's possible) to 202, because that was the one i got with laptop. i will try that tonight.

but, something happened in between - i've reinstalled windows 10, clean install. don't go for any refresh crap and such, put on USB win10 an clean, format drive and install everything. so i've reinstalled windows, installed all programs, set everything up like it was before, and tested again. guess what - GPU didn't go over 65°C , and CPU didn't go over 85°C. i've played some games (CSGO) - and temps were ~70 cpu ~60 gpu - which SEEMS NORMAL FINALLY! so it seems that some drivers / bad installation / something ****s up the fan control.

i will test today reverting from 361.43 to 359.06 which worked good for me before on how temperatures are, then i will try some other intel chipset drivers. they shouldn't make much difference but on last install (before this one) they gave me like -10°C after installing / reinstalling 10 times different, but i didn't catch which ones were good (-_-).
And my setup is this - no undervolt, no fan profiles (NBFP), no underclock, nothing messed on windows (power is on high perf.). i also have no cooling pad, and doing the tests in normal ambient 25°C temperature, maybe a bit more since i'm near a heating pipe (1m behind my back).

also i haven't installed intel Management, intel RST and intel Coll. processor performance driver. not sure if i need any except rst. And 8.1 intel driver chipset installs AHCI controller (even on 10 ) - so no need for RST.

anyway i'll do more testing and tryin' today, i hope i can get max ~80°C when furmark + prime because i had around that when i bought pc (76°C cpu max whatever i did 🙂 )

cross your fingers and pray 🙂

p.s. since my laptop is 1year and cca 3 months old i'll take it probably this summer for a repaste / new vents / heatpipes, just for the **** of it before my warranty runs out 🙂 (but i think it's drivers mostly / windows 10 that ****s up our g751jy. - also i was on 8.1 before never had any cooling issues, should try it maybe again (and maybe i will 🙂 ) 🙂 )

so in the end it seems like i've done nothing, but again i did something. (wierd).

anyway here's the state before - http://i.imgur.com/aPdHzm3.jpg
as you can see - 15% throttling and ****. - also notice that fans run at 3700 RPM! (no PROFILE, no undervolt, nothing, just default, bios 211)

after reinstalling windows 10 and clean drivers - http://i.imgur.com/YRlX3KC.jpg - let windows install drivers only, aida 64 doesn't recognize gpu so it doesn't burn it in.

after updating gpu driver (nvidia official) - http://i.imgur.com/PzpEgYG.jpg

after update aida + furmark - http://i.imgur.com/QvLhZfg.jpg , has little throttling.

after playing 1hour of csgo - http://i.imgur.com/2JQ3AMb.png - notice that temperatures were >60°C and <70°C on graph.
before i reinstalled windows i had >90°C playing CSGO. YES, PLAYING CSGO.

so my final verdict - furmark + prime95 will rape your pc, but since i have 4860 which is pretty hot byitself, and 980m - they both get hot, graphics to around 78°C and it effects the temperature on cpu which reaches near 90, but doesn't go over 90. i wish it was lower, but i guess that requires dust cleaning (the little dust there is anyway) and repaste, but for casual gaming / whatever it will work just fine. processor never gets that hot in normal work, i could try some harder games like crysis 3 to test and see if it's really hot. all in all i think it's just fine. if you have high temps on some random game that is not that demanding - i recommend you format c (CLEAN INSTALL, never repair/refresh/upgrade!!!!! because **** files still stay somewhere) - install windows fresh, install drivers that come with windows - and update to newest drivers that are out from intel / nvidia / realtek. no need for any kinds of pimping and stuff.. enjoy your laptop.

I see between this http://i.imgur.com/YRlX3KC.jpg and this other image http://i.imgur.com/PzpEgYG.jpg
, change the multiplier, I suppose by drivers

cheers!

yes, exactly that. drivers lower it because temperature goes higher.

boxis - i've been playing dota & csgo for 4 hours now, temps still around 70 on CPU, and 60ish on GPU. i'm using vsync, otherwise there's a lot of tearing, so no point in doing that 🙂
i'll try some heavier games and post the results here 🙂 but 96°C in csgo after 3 minutes of playing is very different now when i play 3hours and it's 60-70°C . Very very different. something with windows was wrong / drivers.

that drivers are now using Windows Update?

Well, you are getting these temps because of the vsync. At 60fps in CS:GO you have like 20% GPU +20% CPU usage, that's why I wanted you to check what kind of temperature are you getting (just for testing purposes), if you just max out the game's fps (fps_max 400, v-sync off). You should be getting around 250-330fps with all settings on ultra, and GPU/CPU usage should sit on 99% and 70-90% respectively.

If you can reach 60fps in a particular game, then using v-sync will lower your temps, since GPU will not hit its max usage and that fact will lower your CPU temps as well. I am using it too, however, I don't advice you to use it in CS:GO or other fast paced online games, because the amount of input lag it introduces simply puts you into disadvantaged position.

I have exactly the same temps for around a year and kinda stopped worrying about it. Asus probably set the throttling limit to 95°C down from 100°C, so in theory the CPU won't ever hit 100°C and we won't get free repaste 😄 (Had to pay for repaste last time cause CPU hit "just" 96°C in their test).

Anyway, you should see no stuttering in CS:GO, if ye, then it was probably caused by something else. If you are still getting these temps in Prime+FurMark then you will reach them in longer gaming sessions as well but as I said, you don't have to worry about it.

If you want to test max temps in games, just try to play, either your CS:GO( fps_max 400, all on high and play 2-3 games on public or MM straight), Witcher 3 with vsync off on high so you get like 60fps in Novigrad and just walk around the main square there for few mins, or some other CPU demanding games with v-sync off (GTA 5/ Crysis 3/ Warhammer: Vermintide), you will hit 90°C+ in these games at some point.

Anyway, enjoy your machine.

what do you mean they are using windows update?

like i said in the post above - install nvidia driver (361.43) from nvidia site, and intel chipset from asus g751jy - win 8.1, and then intel chipset driver from g751jy driver page win 10. (win8.1 driver adds AHCI & processor control, and win 10 everything else!!!!)
(yes install 8.1 chipset on win 10 - it will work !!!)

the most important part is - when i upgraded from 10240 to 10586 version of win 10 something went corrupt and nothing could fix it.
CLEAN (Format drive , then install from usb) - solved all my issues with heating. also - furmark and prime95 are now going to max of around 85-90 , before they went 95+ which was a lot of throttling, and now it's ~0-3% if i leave it on for a very long time. that's probably paste job going out, but while gaming

- tested tomb raider (2013) - all options on, ultra settings, fullhd, triple buffered vsync, tressFX, tesselation on - after 30-40 mins of playing on open / closed areas - max cpu temp was 80, and that was just a peak, average was around 75, and gpu ~65 - therefore my conclusion is - it's ok to work on this pc until you have both gpu on 100% and cpu 8x100% which will practically never happen (except in syntethics) - > therefore safe to play 🙂

If you don't want to use Vsync to limit your fps, use NvidiaInspector from 3dguru to limit your fps to 60

Hi,

I know this is kinda old, but I've faced the exact same problem and the solution as you. But 7 days after my clean install, the temps are getting higher again!! Can you tell me what drivers are you using now? I'm using all the latest ones from Asus win10 downloads and nVidia offical.

Thanks
