RGB lighting for Maximus Hero VIII?

Retired

I successfully completed my build over the weekend, and everything went according to plan. Absolutely no issues with installing Windows 10 on the 950 pro on the Asus Maximus VIII Hero.

HOWEVER, after finishing the build, the interior of the computer case is much darker than I would like. Lighting is nice in that I can quickly ascertain fan status or whether a cord has come loose and obstructs a fan spinning. As some of you may know, the M8H does not have a RGB port for rgb lighting. In this instance, what are some options that you have used for internal case lighting?

Great, thank you. It is backordered in most places but this looks like a good option to go with. I'm deaf (I use ASL as my primary language) so seeing the inside is a tremendous benefit as I can see right off the bat what the fan (s) status is, much like how a hearing person relies on their hearing to check the fan status.

Hello LastRideOut

Here is one way to do lighting in your case. You can get a cheap fan controller and hook the lights up to it.

Be sure the wattage of the lights doesn't exceed the channel wattage of the fan controller. These 12" strips below are 2.5w so you can hook up more than one light to a channel.

Here's what you'd need - a cheap fan controller. This one doesn't say how many watts per channel but if it's 10w per channel you could hook three lights up comfortably to a channel. You want to let a little head room and not max out the channel wattage. Three lights would be 7.5w and 3 lights x 4 channels is 12 lights or if you have some fans you can hook them up too.

Here are two examples.

This one is rated 10w per channel.

12" LED strips - If you want to run three lights off one channel select cable option No Need. If you want to run one light per channel select 3 pin fan.

3 way to 3 pin type 10s cable - this allows you to run three lights off one cable and goes from the 3 pin fan to three led strips.

You will need extensions of the length you need with these type9 cables.

I grabbed the Deepcool RGB LED Pack + Controller. Its $25 AUS here, and does precisely what it says on the box. It isn't full RGB in that you cannot specify the precise R, G or B values, but it certainly has enough colours out of the box to match any build other than esoteric ones. Mine is white/black themed, and it does light up the case really nicely. I looked into the HUE+ and other controllers, and found them expensive for what they are, and also looking at the HUE+ in particular, I didn't like the build quality (check out some up-close pictures) and also you cannot change the color of the HUE+ LED, so it is always white no matter what. I thought that was a bizarre decision given what it is. Hope that helps!

I also went for NZXT's HUE+. Easy to fit and lots of colour combinations with different multi coloured light effects. Definitely not stuck with white and not at all poor quality build.

Ended up getting a NZXT Hue+ and I LOVE IT. It took an hour and half for me to install it because I had to move some cables around in the Phanteks Enthoos Evolv ATX case, but, wow, what a tremendous lighting system the HUE+ is. The Evolv ATX is also awesome in managing cables. I have the HUE+ controller hidden away so none of the cables for the HUE+ nor the LED strips are directly visible.

The NZXT Hue+ is good, tho a lil' pricey for just some LED's. I got the CableMods Widebeam RGB 60cm kit. It comes with a remote for instant lighting change. U can get the typical adhesive LED's or like i did, the magnetic ones. Sticks on the metal case with 6 strong rare-earth magnets, so no fearing the dreaded droop after things heat up 🙂
Other ones i tried are NZXT's PCIe LED strip & the Nanoxia UV LED hard rod...
Asus & MSi FTW (For the WiN 🙂 !!
