yeapstab
Level 7
Budget: $2000
Main Uses of intended build: Gaming, and occasional encoding
Parts required: MoBo, CPU, RAM, Storage, Water block
Previous build information:
CPU: intel 990x 4.6 GHz
MoBo: Gigabyte G1 Assassin (XL-ATX)
Memory: Corsair Dominator 12Gb 1600 triple channel
GPU: AMD 390X 8GB
Storage: (2) Samsung 250GB Sata III in raid 0
PSU: SilverStone 1500watt
Case: Rosewill Thor
OS: Win 7 Ult. 64bit
Monitor resolution: 2560x1440
Storage requirements: Samsung 950 m.2 raid 0 & Samsung 840 SSD raid 0, OCZ SSD JBOD
Will be overclocking: Yes with the goal of 4.8GHz and 200 BCLK
Any motherboard requirements: M.2 raid 0
Extra information: This will be using custom cooling radiator and pump case from danger den. I may later down the road get a 2nd video card for xFire.

It’s been a while since I last upgraded. I want to go with Intel’s skylake 6700K, and have been eyeing the the ROG Z170 extreme board. I just wanted some help confirming a few of my assumptions.

a. I can raid 0 two M.2’s on the extreme board via the M.2 slot and the 4th pci-e slot with a hyper M.2 x4 card?
b. Using the 4th pci-e slot disables sata-e lane?
c. I can have a 2nd SATA III raid 0 volume?
d. I’ve never really used XMP, always manually set RAM timings. If I use manual setting to OC the CPU and get the BCLK up to 200 will that effect the RAM speed in XMP?
e. I was eyeing corsair dominator 32GB DDR 3200 (PC25600). Does this still make since with my OC goal?

Thanks in advance!

take a look at the hero alpha board, it have 2x U.2 slots witch you can have 4 drives on each connector on the mobo.
so you could do 2 raids on it if you wanted. ( for storage im thinking of ).
the extreme have only one M.2 slot witch it will share badwith whit the U.2 slot.

Mobo - Maximus VIII formula, it has the crosschill block you can incorporate into your water loop.

CPU - i7 6700k

RAM - Kingston HyperX predator or G.Skill Trident Z

Storage - Samsung 950 pro as you have listed. These drives are fast enough that you don't need to run a raid configuration.

Water block - is of your preference anything socket 115x will work.

Raising the BCLK raises the speed of the ram and cpu. So when raising the BCLK you have to reduce the cpu multiplier and set the ram frequency back as close as possible.

Here are some videos of the maximus viii formula's lighting effects, you can also hook up a 5050 RGB led strip, I don't have an led strip yet. 🙂 You can set the color to the color of your build in static, breathing or strobing effect. The lighting control is in the pic below.

a. I can raid 0 two M.2’s on the extreme board via the M.2 slot and the 4th pci-e slot with a hyper M.2 x4 card? I believe so but the gains are minimal, http://www.thessdreview.com/daily-news/latest-buzz/understanding-m2-3xraid0-nvme-boot-performance/
b. Using the 4th pci-e slot disables sata-e lane? see kkn's responce
c. I can have a 2nd SATA III raid 0 volume? Yes
d. I’ve never really used XMP, always manually set RAM timings. If I use manual setting to OC the CPU and get the BCLK up to 200 will that effect the RAM speed in XMP? see Nates responce
e. I was eyeing corsair dominator 32GB DDR 3200 (PC25600). Does this still make since with my OC goal? GSkill Trident Z is probably the best, purchase the speed you want, Z-170 can run ram at crazy speeds
