    Questions about custom loop

    Hello everyone,

I’m planning to upgrade my GPU to the new Pascal Titan, when they get released. I also would like to make a custom watercooling loop, but I’m pretty new to custom loops and I have a few questions about it. I’m planning to get all my parts from EK.

The specs will be the following :
    i7 5820k OC@4.7GHz
    Rampage V Extreme
2 or 3 Pascal Titan (depending on the price)
    Corsair Obsidian 900D

    1) I heard that you can « calculate » de size your radiators should be, depending on your components ? How does it work ? In that case, I can easily put a 3x120mm at the top and 4x120mm at the side/bottom, I don’t think I need more, but I’d like to be sure.
    2) Once you know the size of the rad, how to know which « thickness » is the best ? The thicker is always the best ?
    3) Does the reservoir size have an impact on the performance ?
    4) How to make sure that my pump is powerfull enough ?
    5) Is [Reservoir] > [Pump] > [CPU] > [Rad1] > [GPU1] > [GPU2] > [Rad2] > [Reservoir] a good setup ?
    6) Where exactly do I connect my fans ? Do they run at the same speed all the time and a simple fan controller is enough, or do I need to create a special fan configuration in the BIOS ? I have my current push-pull AIO with the 4 fans connected to CPU_FAN with a splitter, while the pump is connected to CPU_OPT, and I’m not sure where to connect everything on a custom loop.

I know these are kinda noobish questions, but I couldn’t find an answer on Google. Thank you for your help !

    Hello Skraydd

Welcome to the ROG forum, you may be waiting a little while for the pascal titan if they make one. You know how it is they release the lesser versions first then come with the big boys.

    1) A good rule of thumb is to calculate one 120mm rad for each component, since you will be overclocking your cpu you can add another 120mm. What you have listed will be plenty of cooling for an overclocked cpu and three gpu's. For a cpu cooler check the ek monoblock it is one nice piece of hardware and will cool the cpu, motherboard southbridge and vrm's. The nickel versions are sweet with colored coolant.

    2) A thick rad will give better cooling performance yes but you can go stealth if you wanted to with the size of rads you chose. Since you are going all EK I recommend the EK XTX radiators.

    3) reservoir size doesn't impact cooling performance, its main purpose is to bleed your loop of any air bubbles, I recommend the EK res x 4 250.

    4) With what you're going with I will recommend the EK xtop revo dual d5 pwm pump, it has two pumps so if one ever fails you still have one running as a backup.

    5) Yep that configuration is good.

    6) A fan controller would be a wise investment and there are literally hundreds to choose from. I like the Lamptron FC5-V3, it has six channels at 30w per channel and you can run up to sixty 120mm fans off it easily.

These are not noobish questions, it's good to know you're getting the proper things, these are just my suggestions and you can change anything you want, if you're not sure about something feel free to ask.

Just be sure your fitting size is the same as your tubing size, have a look at these fittings they come in different sizes and colors the only thing is they're not EK.

Hello Nate and thank you for your answers !

I'm really hyped for these GPUs, maybe a bit too much, and waiting isn't an issue. Hopefully they will be out for this summer.
I still have a few questions remaining, I hope I'm not bothering you.

    1) Isn't a "simple" CPU block, like the Supremacy EVO X99, enough ? Considering it will have, in addition of the rad fans, 3 front intakes and 1 back exhaust, isn't the mobo already more than correctly cooled ? What are the benefit of a monoblock ?

    2) Sadly there is no reseller in Switzerland that sell these rads. What about the EK CoolStream XE 380/480 ?

    3) I already have a NZXT Sentry 3 as my fan controller. If I understand correctly, I could connect all my fans, even the ones for the rads, to it ? It would means I connect the pump header to CPU_FAN to let the mobo determinate the correct flow, while all my fans are running at a constant speed ?

    4) I have troubles understanding how to choose the right fittings and tubes. The "1/4 connection", for example, is what I have to check ? What exactly is the meaning of "13/10mm" ?

    5) If my loop goes from the bottom (the GPUs first) to the top, does it change something ?

    6) At the moment, I have a AIO H105 from Corsair with a push-pull configuration, but it's just slightly better than with just 2 fans. Is it different with bigger rads ? Is there a real benefit of having a push-pull configuration ? If not, is it better to push or pull ?

    Thank you again !

    You're welcome

    1) yes you can just use the ek supremacy block for the cpu that is fine. The monoblock cools the cpu, southbridge and vrm's the supremacy will cool just the cpu.

    2) yes those radiators are fine too.

    3) The sentry 3 is a nice fan controller too with 5 channels and 15w per channel, it can handle up to 5 fans per channel for a total of 45 fans. I doubt you will have that many fans.

    4) G 1/4 is the standard for all fittings these days, that is the end that screws into the radiator or waterblock. The other end is the size that needs to be the same. Choose the size of your tubing then get the corresponding fittings. If you go with 3/8 x 5/8 tubing you will want those size fittings or 10mm/16mm.

    Example.

    http://koolance.com/fitting-single-c...8in-fit-v10x16

    5) No not necessarily and it's fine to do it like that, just be sure you stagger the fittings when connecting the gpus.

    Example.

Or if you go with three EK-FC waterblocks you can get this to connect three gpu's together.

    6) Bigger rads will give you better cooling performance but once you get to a certain point adding more or bigger doesn't benefit. I would think a push configuration would be better since you're blowing air through the rad instead of pulling it through.

Okay, thank you again ! I think I understood everything (for now at least), now let's wait for the Pascal GPUs to be released !

Yep I'm looking forward to pascal too.

You have plenty of time to research water cooling your pc, while you're researching think where you would put a drain, it will go somewhere in the lowest part of your loop.

If you have any questions until then just ask.
