useless 4k screen on G501 laptop cant run games - should i return it?

    hi
I purchased the G501vw for my son. It has the 4k screen, 960m, skylake i7 and 16 gb ram etc.

he plays minecraft mainly however his framerates are like 30 fps when using the 4k native resolution. so he is running the laptop in the native 1080p resolution.
Should I return this laptop as I think the 4k is mainly for windows and productivity as I do not think the 960m can run games at the native resolution.

I am a bit confused to whether he should leave it in 1080p or just return the laptop and get one with a regular 1080p display.

    any help appreciated

Are you being serious now? Even 980Ti (one of the fastest desktop graphics card currently available) wont be able to pull smooth 60 fps in all games, and you've expected 960M (a notebook chip) to do that.

Atleast Minecraft was able to pull 30, other games would've been a slideshow with that chip at 4K. I have a 980M and I can't get pefect 60 in 1080p for all titles right now with all the bells and whistles turned on.

None of the single 'M' chips can do a fluent 60 at 4K, period. Maybe a 980M in SLI or the desktop 980 or even 980 SLI (that's in a notebook) could at least try.

If you bought the notebook thinking that you could play games at 4K expecting 60 FPS, you might as well return it. It won't certainly cut it.

First off the 960M is the bottom tier GPU then add a 4K display to that and its too much for it to handle. It has to drive about 4 times as many pixels as a 1080. To even get decent 4K performance from a desktop its going to take at least 2 GTX 980 ti cards in SLI. You are right that this is about a nice display for productivity and marginally for movies.
If you want a laptop that is going to play games with decent performance margins you are going to have to pony up the $$. Take back the BB laptop and source at least a G752VT or if you want top of the line go for the G752VY that have native 1080P (my G752VY is not a stellar performer on an external 4K display) Mine craft is for lack of a better word......weak when it comes to game graphics.

I have the g752vy laptop ( bought for myself and really love it) however I brought the G501 back and bought son a acer predator 15 inch and he loves it (virigin megastore was awesome on changing it out for me)

I know better next time to not get a laptop with 4k and expect to game on it with a mobile chip

    live and learn!
