Torubles with hanging OS and phantom HDD

    Hi,

Approximately four days ago, my system began experiencing random OS freezes (system would hang, mouse very slow to respond) only after 10-15 minutes of use. I am beginning to think a format and reinstall of Windows is the way to go but is there anything that could be causing this in the first place?

Also, I recently installed a third HDD (WD Black 4TB), all seemed to be OK until I turned it off and restarted it the next day, the drive was not appearing in Windows Explorer, after a restart, it would reappear again. So far I have not stored anything on that drive in case its on the fritz.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Ash

    Hi AshN117,

May I ask which motherboard you are working with right now?

This behavior sounds like your drive is not able to come back after entered SATA LPM state, which is engaged after the installation of Intel IRST driver.
We will suggest to go into BIOS, and disable SATA LPM function if there is such option, or engage Hot plug function for all your SATA ports, and see if this helps to iron out this problem for you.

    Hi AshN117,

If you have installed Intel IRST, then that could be related.
Try my previous suggestion and let us know if the problem persists.

    Many thanks.

Thanks a bunch for the suggestion!

I booted into the BIOS and could not find any LPM function, but I did find that the HOTPLUG function was already enabled for all the SATA ports that were listed. No luck

On a side note, could this be a RAM issue? Or possibly the MB itself?

    In AshN117,

In that case we can rule out the LPM related possibility.

    The other possibilities include:
    - CPU overheat
    - DRAM incompatibility

Motherboard instability is unlikely according to my experience, though not 100%.

Please try checking the peak CPU temperature and overall stability of your DRAM with Prime95 and MEMTEST86+ for windows and see if you can track instability from there.
