    Looking for input on NON-Standard M.2 and HDD Use

    I know the norm here is put the OS on the fastest drive, but I do video and photo editing, so itís more important I have fast data access than program access. I currently have a 512gb M.2 drive that the OS lives on and a 7200 HD for data. The way I see it I have a couple options and Iím curious for group input.

    1. Buy an SSD for my data disk. I donít like using the same disk for Source and render Files (Render files are temporary files created when an effect is applied to a photo or video. The file is created for editing and playback but is no longer required when the final product is exported) and the SSD will get bottlenecked in the SATA. I do like the simplicity though.

    2. Switch the drive functions so the OS is on the HD and the M.2 is free to use as a render drive. Iíd get the speed of the PCIE for work intensive render files and the 7200 is plenty fast for the program files. The hang ups I see are; I donít know how to get the OS from the M.2 to the HD, and without a bios I donít know if I can change the master/slave relationship.

    3. Keep the M.2 for OS and buy an external thunderbolt Samsung Evo SSD. Leveraging the PCIE connection of thunderbolt Iíd get the full use of the SSD speed. Plus the dual channels of thunderbolt make me more comfortable with keeping source and render files in the same location. I could then use the HD as a backup for my source files, so Iíd have built in redundancy. Itís a bit of a non-standard setup, but right now itís my favorite.

    I upgraded my G752VY since I bought it, as follows:
    • BIOS 206 -> BIOS 213
    • 1TB HDD -> 2TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD
    • 512 GB NVMe Samsung 951 M.2 SSD -> 2x 512 GB Samsung 950 Pro NVMe M.2 SSD in RAID0
    • 32GB Samsung DDR4 -> 64GB Samsung DDR4

    With the RAID0 you gain a bit in read speeds but more in write speeds. I think you could swap the Bluray/DVD ODD for a caddy in which you can add a second SATA Samsung SSD for another RAID0

    Im not sure Im understanding your dilemma. My primary use of my G752VY is precisely what you have mentioned. Photo and video editing. My configuraion is 2x 512GB Samsung 950 pros in raid 0 and a 1TB Samsung 850 evo in the HDD slot. The spinner is in a box in the closet.
    The 850 pro is 5x faster than the spinner and the two NVMe M2 drives in raid 0 more than 5x faster than the 850 pro. I keep source on the 850 and render on the M2s. Ive had no bottleneck issues in the least.
    Back ups go to a NAS with 5x6TB drives, 4 of them in raid 6 array with one of the drives as a hot spare. This give me 18TB of actual storage, one drive fails the hot spare automatically takes its place and the array is rebuilt automatically, In raid 6 two drives can fail with no adverse affect. I can then order up a new drive and install it at my leisure as a hot spare. or if two fail I can replace the both never having lost any data.

    It has 4 GB ethernet ports that are load balanced connected to my ASUS AC 5300 router.
    If I need more space I can expand it easily with another 5 drives with a synology dx 513 expanion unit, can attach 2 of these expansions if needed for a total 0f 15 drives up to 8TB each. https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DX513
