1, 2 and 3 Samsung 961s on RVE10 boards in RAID 0 it works!

Hey all,

So I got three Samsung SM961 256GB M.2 drives today. I thought I would have a little fun to see what this board could do.
One stick for every day usage is more than enough. A person will not do enough sustained read/writes to notice the difference. However if you have some videos that need to be edited/rendered it seems that 2 of these m.2 drive in RAID 0 is the sweet spot.
Notice how there seems to be a bottleneck as the numbers drop when going from 2 to 3 m.2s.

Overall I'm very impressed how two of these work in RAID 0.

Test Setup:

- All SM961 were on a m.2 to PCI-e card and in a PCI-e slot running at x4.
- There was a Samsung 950 in the dedicated m.2 slot.
- Motherboard is the Asus Rampage Extreme Edition 10
- RAID arrays setup via Windows 10 Disk Management
- I have a single 1070 GPU running at x16 and an Intel 5930k (40 lanes) running

Single Stick:
58476 58477 58478

Two SM961 in RAID 0:
58479 58480 58481

Three SM961 in RAID 0:
58482 58483 58484

Good stuff! 🙂

Yeah I'm quite impressed with these little drives. I got three so I'll use one for boot and two in RAID 0 (why not) for gaming drive.

I hear for that new Samsung M.2 961, but is it better than 950 PRO?
I read that Samsung should launch new driver for him, for better performance.
Price is similar very and it's would be good if he work in specifications. Still is not available on Samsung site or I couldn't find him to check specifications better.

I have a 950 and they run about the same under real world scenarios. I have heard that they do need a firmware tweak and I'll be keeping an eye out for Lenovo and HP to see if they put one out like they did the AHCI version of the 951. They didn't for the NVME version.

Still, running two in Raid 0 does feel a little more speedy, but I could be imagining things.

I just thought to order in Monday 950PRO and guy to bring me from Hungary for 3-4 days. But than I saw SM961.
Valid comparison for me is SM961 512 vs 950 PRO 512... This is only little space, for 3-6 months we could expect 960 PRO.
If I need to choose right now, immediately I would probably go with 950 PRO. He is launched for us with driver support and SM961 is not even available on Samsung site.
Probably is installation easier and more secure with 950 PRO. On review say they are very similar in real world, exactly as you say.
Special 950 PRO 512 is big difference from 256 version.

For me they are good investment because always could be installed in gaming laptop with base configuration.
ASUS ROG laptop with best CPU and best GPU, min RAM quantity and HDD is much much cheaper than version with big SSD and M.2.
And than you can move them inside. Most of gaming laptops If I saw good have space for 2x M.2 and 2x SSD.
HDD should be avoided except if someone really need them because huge datas. Gamers could use external USB 3.0 HDD to transfer data.
