Samsung SSD 950 installation in Hero V III

I had installed a SSD Samsung 950 Pro M.2 256 GB. Can I use also the ports SATA 1-2 for other hard disks ? The manual of the Hero it's not clear in this matter.

No it's clearly states that SATA ports 1-2 will be disabled.

The fact is I had installed hard disks on sata ports 1-2 and work. So what it's the true ?

Check in GPU-Z what your bus interface is.

The thing is I too connected my 2 drives to sata1-2 (I use m.2 ssd also) and they work fine. My GPU is running now at x4 so maybe thats an issue...

Ports 1 and 2 will be disabled if the M.2 drive is used in SATA mode.

The Samsung 950 PRO is a PCIe M.2 SSD so it won't affect the SATA III ports.

So for the moment the answers it's 50-50 if we can use sata 1-2 or not

Any official answer direct from ASUS maybe it will help.

It's not 50-50. Sata 1-2 will be disabled if m2 ssd is running in SATA mode. If its running in AHCI mode then the ports will work. Default setting is AHCI. I have set m2 to AHCl thats why stata 1-2 works for me. For you too I guess 🙂

My Asus Maximus VIII Ranger board supports NVMe in the m.2 port. My manual states only sata port 1 will be disabled if you are using this in PCIx4. It also states that if the m.2 is a Sata type drive port 1 & 2 will be disabled.

Using an OCZ/Toshiba RD400 128gb NVMe MLC SSD in the m.2 port and my sata port 2 works fine for a storage drive, a Samsung EVO 850 500GB.

Is AHCI not associated with a normal SSD? or does that mean your m.2 is a normal 6gbs sata drive?

Asking because my RD400 defaulted to legacy OS install instead of UEFI. Wondering if I should reinstall Windows for UEFI but I don't have all the settings some of the other boards have.

Is AHCI mode also the protocol for an NVMe m.2 drive?

Yes it is.
