Different GTX 1080 cards and the cooling in the G20AJ

Hi guys,

I have a G20AJ with the 970 card in it right now, and am looking to upgrade to a 1080 card.

Having the 970 already, as far as I have read, I don't need to buy another power brick, changer jumpers and so on. I have also read on here that a lot of people have had no problems fitting Founder's Edition cards into the G20AJ.

Thing is, FE cards cost a bundle (at least here in Denmark) and a lot more than many others. However, the card of course needs to fit, and be cooled in a way that corresponds with the cooling system already in the G20AJ case.

So I have two things I was wondering, which I hope some of you fine people might be able to help me with:

1. Has anyone fitted other 1080 cards than FE in their G20AJ? If yes, which card and what temperatures are you getting?

2. I am personally looking at the MSI GTX 1080 AERO 8G OC, which seems to have similar cooling to the FE edition cards. Am I right in this assumption? And what other cards out there have cooling that fit within the G20AJ cooling scheme?

1) Haven't seen any thread here about a non reference model being installed. I saw one on a YouTube comment once but cant find it anymore. Someone was able to fit an asus gtx turbo inside the case but without the metal frame holding the video card.

2) Your assumptions is right. If you checked the asus and msi website you'll find this measurement for the cards but it would be best to wait till someone has actually installed one and posted here or online.

Hi, over 2 month ago, i upgraded my g20 to 1070 fe from asus. Everything is fine, temp under load ~78C. If you dont want have a trouble, pls use only reference card.

The card needs to be the style to exhaust air out of the rear, not circulate the air from inside the case such as the EVGA ACX derivatives. You'd also have to verify measurements. Sticking with reference seems to ensure a very good chance of compatibility.

Thanks for your replies guys. Luck would have it that I got my hands on a EVGA GTX 1080 FE card at a discount, still with my 14 days of full refund availabe. So I took the plunge and ordered it, and installed it.

Just for kicks, here are my scores in the 3D Mark demo, my old GTX 970 being the reference. The temps are CPU and GPU, respectively, max running the given demo.

Skydiver:

GTX 970 - 19457 / 33102 / 6688 / 15849 (64,5℃ / 81,0℃)
GTX 1080 - 24901 / 63505 / 6782 / 16051 (62,0℃ / 84℃)

Fire Strike:

GTX 970 - 8430 / 10612 / 6152 / 4245 (64,5℃ / 81,0℃)
GTX 1080 - 13176 / 21160 / 6187 / 6172 (63,0℃ / 89,0℃)

Time Spy:

GTX 970 - 2983 / 3018 / 2804 (65,5℃ / 81,0℃)
GTX 1080 - 5637 / 6904 / 2764 (65,0℃ / 90,0℃)

I suspect my processor is a bit of a bottleneck with the new card, as the other tests (beside the pure graphics test, which is the second number each time) shows. It's a i5-4460.

Now, tests are one thing, another is the experience itself, and I didn't quite get what I had hoped for. I was hoping to run Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 in 4K, with respectable, but not ultra, settings. I didn't even try Witcher 3, cause it couldn't even handle Fallout 4 to my liking in 4K. Again, maybe in part due to my processor.

Also, as the tests show, the GTX 1080 ran VERY hot. I even clocked it at 94,0℃ while gaming Fallout 4 for about half an hour, so I stopped immediately and didn't want to risk trying out Witcher 3!

And all this leads me to the biggest problem, which of course is a side effect of the heat. MY GOD the card was loud! It was like sitting next to a vacuum cleaner or a hairdryer! And since I don't game with headsets, it was driving me mad!

So I returned the card. And to anyone considering switching a GTX 1080 into their G20AJ and expecting it to run fine with no further adjustments, I can only advise against it. It will run hot as hell itself and leave you deaf on whichever ear your computer is placed nearest to!

Best card for A20AJ is GTX1080 Founders Edition or some other model with Turbine.
Few different models are available.

I was running a 980 Ti Sc reference style by Evga for about 6 mounts with a external psu, Corsair 750W. All was running sweet and at max Oc.
Right now I changed in a Gtx 1080 Sea Hawks MSI/Corsair water cooled. The installation was fine and easy then on 980ti with double pin.
Right now I'm running a G20Aj with i7 4790 at 4.0 Ghz and this monster card at max 51C at full load. Not tried yet to Oc cos is useless. Running on 34 ULTRAWIDE by Samsung. Or better 2K at ultrawide. All the games max fulled, can get without problem 60 fps and more.
So I'm very happy with that. I got an improvement about 20%. So if you are planning to get a 1080,buy a water cooled style and put that inside. Anyway with the standard power brick u will be ok.

Didnt need any water cooler on the G20CB when the new GTX 1080 and i7-6700K 4.0Ghz is running close to the same degree as before the change.
But i agree in that is fun to put a water cooler on this small computer box.
