That actually looks pretty good, if you use Realbench your temps will be lower which will let you overclock a little further.

If you can get to 4.6GHz that's pretty good on air. Remember you can take stress testing temps up to 90c that will tell you your limit, then play a demanding game and see where temps are. Because they went to 16nm they lowered the maximum temperature to 64c but anything below 70c when playing games should be fine.

What's crazy is that my i7 4790 at stock speed on a weaker air cooler only hits 67c max running Prime.

The haswell cpu's were done on a 22nm die and the max temp for those cpu's is just under 75c, max voltage is the same at 1.52v.

I used to use prime95 for stress testing but once I saw Realbench gives about 10c lower it's all I use anymore.

10c lower will easily get you another 100MHz.

Still running and the highest core is 77, but the lowest only maxed to 69 so...

I am inclined to think that if 1 of the cores can stay that low, perhaps a very careful and strategic application of thermal grease can improve the temps.
Pretty sure I applied it at least decent, but I bet I can do a better job and bring the max temp down at least 2-3 degrees. Will try that in awhile.

    All right

How do you apply the thermal paste?

I do the spread method, apply a dab about the size of a small pea in the center of the cpu and spread it evenly over the entire cpu with a credit card or drivers license. Then install the cooler starting at one corner then go diagonal to the opposite corner, tighten all 4 screws until the cooler is snug.

Since this cooler has direct touch heat pipes, I have to do the spread with card technique rather than the put a pea and let the heat sink squash and spread it method.
Didn't help much and this darn chip I got is just a straight up dog. I may go to Micro Center today and just swap it. Since I have that option, I might as well try my luck again.

    All right

Did you get your cpu swapped?

You won't know how good it is until you overclock it.

Have to wait till tomorrow or maybe even Friday. Honestly if I had to choose between a cpu with a lot of over clocking headroom or 1 that would run as cool and low volted as possible at stock speed, I'd choose the latter. We'll just have to wait and see.

Got my replacement cpu today along with another different cooler because sadly the Macho was about 2mm too tall for my case.
The measurements on Thermalright's site say the cooler is 158mm tall, but the way the fan mounts (cannot be adjusted to sit lower)
has it roughly 3-4mm above the heat pipe ends at the top of the cooler making the total height anywhere from at least 161 to maybe
just over 162. Tried to put the side on the case and it touches completely and even enough that the side of the case flexes out about 1mm.
Since the first cooler I got was a BeQuiet! and since I thought it was fantastic quality even though it was too weak a model for my needs,
I got another model BeQuiet!!, The Dark Rock 3. It looks amazing and while that isn't the #1 reason I got it, it's a nice bonus. Seriously,
this is the most amazing looking air cooler I've seen! Before installing and testing the new cpu, I cleared the cmos (with the power cable
unplugged of course). During the 1st boot with the new cpu installed, I wanted to start my testing without adjusting any settings other then
enabling the ram's XMP profile which I did and then saved and exited to allow the system to reboot into Windows. This means of course that
I let the cpu and board determine the default cpu voltages to do the first testing. I ran ROG RealBench using the 15 minute stress test preset
and adjusting the ram limit to allow up to 16gb (half of my total ram). It was able to pass with 2 hash matches in that time and a max cpu
temp of 67c. So far things are looking very good, but since I'm so OCD, I have lots more testing to do. My hopes are very high though and I
will continue to keep this thread updated. A huge thank you to Nate and Kenrou, wish there was something I could do for you guys to show
my appreciation for your help and especially your patience when I was being impatient and probably a little snippy. Seriously, you guys rock!

    Stay tuned....
