Exact same thing happened to me
Read through this thread and wanted to chime in to say the exact same thing happened to me.
x99 STRIX
6900k with corsair h115i
trident z 32gb @ 3200
corsair Ax1200i
sli 980ti's
950 pro
after less than two weeks running, with mild overclock (switched to Performance in bios) 4ghZ, came home to my pc dead, got the same code 00 crap, cycling reboot, no post.
tested cpu on another board and same thing, so RMA'd the cpu, current one has been working fine, but now I worry that the motherboard has faulty VRMs as stated by the OP.
I have found the board to be rather unstable when trying to manually push for more overclock only after having a solid stable overclock for about a month, cpu voltage at or around 1.3, setting all cores to 44, ram to 3200 and 1.35, cache at 33/35.. I had it running stable at these settings for about a month after hour stress-test, but now it will crash after an hour or so of gaming at said OC settings. I've since then left things at default in fear of the same thing happening to my CPU.. could the boards VRMs be diminishing over time and be unreliable? I am noticing ASUS has been releasing new BIOS updates almost monthly. Is that normal? COuld it also be BIOS issues?
Just thought I would share that you aren't the only one finding this board to be a shaky purchase. Should've gone for the WS board.

I also had the same issue, error code reported 00 and red CPU error led was on. System would not POST. I took it to a local repair shop that swapped the CPU under Intel’s warranty however after reading what everyone else is saying, I am concerned for this CPU too as it appears to be a problem with the mobo.
Specs:
CPU: 6800K (overclocked to 4ghz, 40x multiplier)
Cooler: Corsair H110i
Mobo: Asus Strix X99 (BIOS was 1201 when things went wrong, currently is 1401)
Ram: 32gb Ripjaw V
Video: 2x EVGA 980ti FTW
PSU: EVGA Supernova 1000 p2
HDD: 512gb Samsung 950 pro + 5tb WD blackLast edited by Iyren; 11-19-2016 at 05:36 PM.

After reading the reports of others who experienced the same identical issue as mine, I contacted Asus Singapore again to update them and ask for their input regarding this major issue. I also think the the high number of bios updates since the board has been released shows that they are actually aware that there is something seriously wrong - maybe at the design level.
For now, this information will be passed on to the engineers and I will wait for an update as to how they wish to proceed.
If a recall is needed, than that's what they should do. I really hope they'll find a good solution because I rather not re-install my system from scratch because of their own hardware design issues, nor do I wish to start any more RMA processes.Last edited by mulderfox; 11-18-2016 at 07:51 AM.

Hello all. New user here and I wanted to give some details on this same exact issue I've just experienced.
About a month and a half after having built this PC, today I come back down stairs after having paused X Files on Netflix only to come to find my PC powered off. I become a bit confused and power it back on. As a few minutes go by with no post and I do some basic troubleshooting, I finally manage get it to post after unplugging all usb devices with an 'overclock failed' message (was at 4.2GHz 1.26v vcore on 6900k), changed bios back to default settings, and 00 qcode again.... (I was on bios version 1201 btw) After that, I could never get it to post again. Tried everything and was just faced with the good 'ol 00.
Eventually my stomach drops in horror as I come to the realization that all the 1 egg reviews on Newegg should have been the sign to follow. But being the faithful ASUS buyer I've been for the literal past 8 motherboards I've owned (only this is the 2nd board having an issue) I figured why not and took the leap of faith because of my loyalty to ASUS.
Looks like I'm having to send back my now fried 6900k and STRIX X99 ROG motherboard back to Newegg. Wonderful use of time... But it looks like this motherboard is just bad luck period.

Follow thing found was
BIOS 0401 When running stock makes cpu vcore go up to 1.62 volt stuff tatt makes this happen easy web surfing
BIOS 0601 Does the same has 0401
BIOS 0801 First that dident do it, working fine - Cons bad overlocker , has not the issue as 0401/0601
BIOS 1003 Better when overlockering has not the issue as 0401/0601
BIOS 1101 Havent testet
BIOS 1201 Has Problem as 0401/0601
BIOS 1301 / BIOS 1401 currently testing 1401 No problem
Was cinda hard to find the problem but all the motherboard whit bios 0401 and 0601 Did the same . sems the clueprint is Adaptive mode and bad bios design

I suspect I'm having the same issue. Just had a very random and abrupt shutdown while doing basic use.
I'm running BIOS 1401
i7 6800k at 4.2ghz with everything on auto
3200gb ram at 1.35v
Tried to restart and got 00 Qcode. Cycled the PSU and it started back up.
