Surface challenge

Hi All,

I figured Id issue a challenge to us Asus enthusiasts. Microsoft just announced their "surface studio" an all in one computer with collapsable monitor (28" 4500x3000) that can be drawn on with their capacative stylus. Seeing that the cheapest of these is an i5 with 1tb drive (or i7 with 512 drive, microsoft has two different depictions of the same machine with different stats for the same price) with a m965 gtx graphics for 3000 USD, I was wondering if is there anything we could construct using parts that already exist with similar (or better) features for less?

So far for a "better build," with heavy rounding, what I got is:
$250 ~ Maximus Impact motherboard (This covers sound quality, bluetooth and wifi)
$250 ~ Intel i5 6600k
$175 ~ Asus 1050ti Strix OC (Guessing the price, the duo's going for 160)
$50-80 ~ Gold 80 Plus power supply that's on sale
$50-80 ~ Case that's on sale
$80 ~ 1tb Hybrid Hard drive
$60 ~ 8gb ram (one or two sticks)
$915-975 for the total so far.

Its the monitor that's a doozy. There's a few close ones but they're all 1080 and nothing comes close to that 28inch 3000x4500 (192dpi) screen that also has touch capacity. Sharp had a 5k with stylus going for 5000$ a few years ago. Which now looks to be adjusted to a 4k with touch the PN-K322bh (no idea what that price is but probably at least $1000.)

There are however a few 1080P monitors with stylus going for $300 (monoprice, refurbished) and an Asus one for $900 on amazon.

Hi Veovis

You should get a monitor that your graphics card is capable of running, there isn't a single gpu that will give you playable frame rates at 4500 x 3000 resolution, 1080's in sli would even struggle at that resolution.

An ROG Strix 1070 and a 1440p monitor is a good combination.

Here is an example with Doom at 1600p which is only one small step above 1440p, see the FPS in the top right corner.

The cut scenes run at 60 FPS.

Oh I'm well aware, Nate. But you seem to have completely missed the topic of my challenge.

The idea is to build a machine that mimics the Surface Studio for less than the cost of a Surface Studio, not to make a gaming rig out of it.

However, your response does raise the question if one were to make this fictional machine have the qualities of gaming rig in addition to being an art studio.

That said, It's puzzling that Microsoft is going to put a 4000$ price tag on their i7 version of that screen with a 4gb m980 gtx card. There's no way on earth the Surface Studio could do gaming at its max resolution if a 1080 (single or SLI) can't, especially if they're going to use it to render anything in 3d with it (though that might be why there's 32 gb on the highest priced Studio for the CPU.)

Basically what would be a max stat machine that could beat the pants off of a high end Studio would be (Keep in mind trying to stay under the 4K budget of the studio):
$250 Impact VIII
$305 i7 6700k
$200 for 32gb Ram
$720 Asus 1080 Strix O8G edition (for 4k 60 fps ultra on any game, x2 on a respective motherboard for 5k)
$250 x2 intel SSD drives (1tb solid state raid 0)
$180 Titanium 80 750w PSU (seasonic)
$50-200 case
$100 Fans (or other cooling solution)
$2455-2605 total before mouse, monitor and keyboard

And the bottleneck being a non-existant 28inch 4-5k monitor with interactive stylus. From Asus it would be whatever upgrade to the PT201Q. (non existant.)

I'll take it their pc is more for looking at high resolution pictures than playing games which doesn't count here at ROG. 😉

You could easily build a nice machine to view pictures at 5k resolution for under 4,000.00. 5k is 5120 x 2880 resolution and price is just over 1,000.00. That leaves 3,000.00 for the pc which is easily doable.

Dell 5k monitor (not touch screen)

Which is why this is a challenge. The idea is to take the knowledge and use it to see if it's possible to get a desired result, not just geared for gaming.

Anyway the closest I can find for the monitor that could double as a 1:1 dynamic ratio tablet is the SHARP PN-K322B, which is less than ideal as it's hard to find for sale and when it is it's going for about 5-6K
