Maximus VIII Ranger QVL for memory modules questions

Hello RoGers,

I'm thinking to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB my rig - no rush since i can run daily software without problems.
I have Maximus VIII Ranger, a Z170 platform with 4 slots for DDR4 memory modules (up to 3400 OC according to website, but 3466 OC in QVL).
I looked on QVL for memory modules today to check some kits and notice that there are still a lot of kits for X99 platforms (8 modules in kit).
They are usually for bigger ammounts of memory from from 32 to 64GB kits (or even 128GB kits, even if Ranger has maximum 64GB as option).
Problem is that there are some kits that include 8pcs of memory modules (Ranger has only 4slots).
Does someone from ASUS got to really check these QVL modules or someone decided that if they work for X99 they work for Z170 too.
I presume that if there is a QVL list someone will check and see memory kits can actually work at specs presented in QVL list.
Or you buy a 128GB kit and use half of them? Or these kits have never been checked on Z170 platform.

My GSkill rams are not found in the ranger 8's manual and I've 4 sticks of it. Using it now, no issue.

Check the QVL list from the RAM manufacture is the way to go

Congratz Souma :D. Kit i'm using right now is on QVL list and it's working great.
I'm sure there are lots of memory kits that work with mobo (Ranger in this particular case) and are not in QVL.
We are in the business of OC and nothing is guaranteed. We try and see if they work and if they do we push further to the limit.
I just asked how ASUS make this list with approved memory kits, as X99 kits with 8 modules are not suitable for Z170.

Hi yamatosan

I always go by the Ram manufacturers QVL list.

G.skill Trident Z is probably as good as it gets price/performance and works great with the ROG boards.

Here is the 16GB 3200MHz 14-14-14-34 kit, click the QVL tab then Asus.

How much is Gskill paying you to advertise their RAM, Nate? lol
