can m.2 and a sound card split the 4 lanes of pci express slot 3

I have an Asus hero VIII. I would like to use one GPU at 16x and the Samsung 950 pro M.2 with a pci express sound card (Asus Xonar STX). What I am wondering is if I can do this by using GPU in slot 1 for 16 and soundcard in slot 3. The M.2 normally all 4 of the last 4 lanes. I am wondering if I install the sound card will it split the lanes with the M.2 and work, or would I have to install the sound card in slot 2 for GPU x8 soundcard x1 (I believe) and M.2 x4. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

you got it wrong with the PCIe lanes, there are more than 20 lanes, you have a total of 36, 16 CPU lanes that are linked to the 2 grey PCie slots, and 20 PCH lanes that are linked to the rest of the PCIe slots and M.2 port.
