FX502VM / GL502VML - m.2 sata or nvme?

Hi,

Trying to order a m.2 drive, but there doesnt seem to be any documentation which slot it has. I believe that the FX502VM is a budget GL502VM with disabled features (no USB 3 type c, 3 GB GTX 1060, etc) but wasnt sure if it also limited the m.2 to sata only.

HWInfo shows the motherboard to be a GL502VML (Intel HM170)

The user manual on the preinstalled Asus software doesnt specify (0409_E10691_NB_User's_Guide_A - 8.8.2016)

There is no user manual on the product page:
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/FX502VM/

The Drivers and Downloads page points to the GL502MVL.

The user manual for the GL502VM says it can support SSD or NVME
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/GL502VS/0409_E11526_GL502VT_VY_V2_A.pdf

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello CBRad
The motherboard has a empty M.2 2280 slot if you are considering to upgrade your unit, thank you

Hi Bill,

Correct it has a M.2 slot, but is it SATA or NVME as NVME is not compatible on a SATA only slot.

Thanks,

Brad

http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/FX502VM/specifications/ only lists SATA III so I would go with that.

fyi.

Checked into it more on my end and sounds like we/ASUS are only shipping the FX502VM with SATA3 M.2 SSDs installed and 'officially' only approved those drives, so yes, it's the safer option.

'Unofficially' though it sounds like the FX502VM was designed to support PCIe M.2 SSDs as well though, so there may be a chance those would work as well, but we haven't approved any on the ASUS end for the FX502VM, so don't have any PCIe M.2 SSDs we could recommend and would not guarantee it.
If someone happens to have a PCIe M.2 SSD lying around and can try it risk-free, it may be worth looking into more.

Hopefully we can get more feedback from others too. Thanks.

Has anybody tried using an M.2 they had laying around on their FX502VM? The board itself does state it is a GL502VMZ, so I can't see why it wouldn't... need insight very soon.

When in doubt, you can refer to the eManual for FX502VM. There you can see that both PCIe (NMVe) and SATA are supported for the M.2 slot. I have also confirmed with R&D.

Oh shoot. I guess I skimmed over it the first time I was going through it. In any case, I have since confirmed that the M.2 does indeed work with the FX502VM (which is in fact a GL502VMZ based platform) as it is now currently equipped with a Samsung 960 500GB EVO SSD drive. I hope whomever needs this information next may easily find it.

PS. also replaced the 1TB HGST HDD with a Seagate 2TB Firecuda, and shoved a Ripjaws G Skill 16GB Ram stick in the open slot.

Yes it supports NVMe (PCIe) M.2 2280 slot, I have the Samsung EVO 960 as well.
