Testing my new rig raised some questions...

Hi people,

I'm new to overclocking and i don't like to do things i'm not sure of, so i wanted to to test my system on default settings and i noticed some discrepancies...
Hope some people here can clarify some information i got for me. I don't want to overclock it to the max, but just to tweak it a bit to get the best performance / power consumption / durability ratio ...

Just upgraded my PC to:

Mobo : Strix x99 gaming
cpu: intel 6800k 2011v3
ram: corsair vengeance lpx 16 ddr4266hrz 32GB(2x16)
ssd: samsung 850 evo v-nand
gpu: asus strix GTX 1070 O8G Gaming, driver 378.49 v.bios 86.04.50.00.as01
Corsair H55 water cooling, (might upgrade if needed)

to monitor my statistics i run:
- cpu-z ver.1.178.1
- gpu-z rog edition ver.1.16.0
- asus gpu tweak 2 ver.1.3.2.2

benchmark (to start with)
-unigine heaven 4.0 dx11

so the first thing in noticed in GPU tweak is that the

GPU clock, MHz is set to Min 696/Max 696 MHz (can't change it)

which contradicts the GPU-z information

GPU core clock between +/- 1000 MHz and 1600 MHz
GPU memory clock +/- 2000 MHz

the second was in the test results

Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0

FPS:
90.2
Score:
2273
Min FPS:
30.0
Max FPS:
190.6
System

Platform:
Windows NT 6.2 (build 9200) 64bit
CPU model:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6800K CPU @ 3.40GHz (3397MHz) x6
GPU model:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 21.21.13.7849 (4095MB) x1 <<<<<<<<<<
Settings

Render:
Direct3D11
Mode:
1920x1080 8xAA fullscreen
Preset
Custom
Quality
Ultra
Tessellation:
Extreme

it states that my GPU has 4095 of memory ? but the GPU has 8GB ??? is this something like dual channel 4GB twice the speed?

the other thing is that the "User define setting" of the fan speed control (GPU Tweak 2) is set to 0<100 C at the 0% line and can't change that? right click... dragging... does not work..

any help would be much appreciated,

Kind regards

Hi penta555

Try running the unigine valley benchmark and post your score in the ROG Strix 1070 overclocking guide, this will give us a better idea of where you stand.

http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?86398-Strix-GTX-1070-Overclocking-Guide

In the user define fan control left click on the boxes to move them.

There is an issue with gpu tweak II and the new nvidia 378.49 driver that's causing gpu tweak ii to not read the core clock correctly, they're working on a fix.

You can overclock it to the max and I recommend it, you can't damage it as the max voltage is capped at 1.093v and temps shouldn't hit 70c with the fans cranked. You should gain 10 FPS or a little more in the benchmark, let us know if you have samsung or micron memory and if you've updated the vbios in the overclocking guide.

I'm looking forward to your results. 🙂

Unigine Heaven = old and dont support over 4gig of mem on the cards, so dissregard that info it shows.
card clocks down when not in use, and boost up when in starts working.
this to save power and to keep it cold.

doing the suggested right now, be back shortly with screen shots and more info

Hi nate , let me know what you think,

Thanks
