M.2 SSD temperature

I guess, we can officially call 2_2 slot colder than 2_1.

It is pretty interesting to me that an M.2 SSD can get this hot considering its form factor is kind of slim. Anyway, can a BIOS update perhaps fix this? Or just place a few fans in your case to further improve the ventilation?

This isnt realy a "problem"... i never got my SSD so hot that it's throddle... There are tests they say you can write 250GB to the SSD befor the SSD throddles because of temps...

So, there is not a real problem, but cooler is better and change the slot takes 2 minutes and brings 10°C under load, so i switched to 2_2...

The form factor IS the problem in some way.
A super fast controller is packed in a tiny space with everything else.
The heat would be distributed better if there was more space to be distributed on.

The drive will throttle as fast, as it heats up. I have seen test in witch poor ssds were pushed beyond 100c. Yes they throttled, throattled but continued to work. But I don't want to stress my drive to much by frying it, so I will stick heatsinks in it (as they arrive) and maybe add a cooler.

I've moved my M.2 back to M.2_1 now as I needed the sata ports. However this time I removed the plastic cover and will just leave it off. Doesn't look as nice but until they release some sort of 3d printing file I can modify into something usable it will have to do. Temps without the cover aren't actually that much worse than M.2_2, at least not like the 70c I was getting with the cover on. As for the pch rgb lights, I don't really use the lights on the motherboard anyways. Just some nice subtle UV light strips to go with my uv tubing.

Ty, but if I'm going to get a heatsink it will be a full cover one like


Or completely dispense with the mobo slot and watercool it with one of these:


I have actually used those exact ones you are getting for the cpu's on raspberry pi's and they work fairly well. Tbh though I am a little sceptical that any heatsink will make that much of a difference to an M.2 stick (at least in terms of avoiding thermal throttling). Will be interested in hearing if it does.

I believe that anything is better that nothing.
My ssd doesn't get as hot as it needs to start to throttle, but still, I'll help him a little, just incase.

P.S what did You use to stick heatsinks to chips? Will that tape, that comes together with heatsinks handle?

Should I cut off edges of tape, that will not contact with cips?

Yes they work for me, these are similar http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/371498486697 I purchased 3 kits to have three large sinks that fit perfectly, self adhesive pads
Also seen some black ones and copper ones if colour is important

For the controller (the main trouble-maker)

I'm a bit aware, that (in case of my MP500) the controller surface is very small, and there will be a big part of pad left "hanging", may be even melt and drip down to the pcb. Thinking about cutting and removing the ecxess... leaving only a small porting by the size of controller.

And a bit smaller ones for memory modules.

These will fit better, cuz mem.modules have bigger size.

So I did some tests. SSD runs 2300 MB/s at it's peak, 955 MB/s at it's peak write.

Without cooling I got to 112°C in burn, in idle 40-60°C depends on what he was "not doing".

With passive cooling and VGA airflow I'm at 28-32°C idle, 51°C at maximum burn, @ environment temp. 24°C and RH 38% and needs about 30-40 seconds to cool down from 51°C to 41°C after burning him for a few minutes.

Idle in here looks close to mine...
So not only Corsair has failed with overheating.
